ARMED FORCES BOARD

SITTING AT QUEENSTOWN A sitting of the Armed Forces Appeal Board—Messrs J. R. Bartholomew, S.M (chairman), J. Price and H. Hodgson—was held at Queenstown on Saturday. Mr A. N. Haggitt appeared for the Crown. The Director of National Service appealed for Andrew Charles Henderson, a farm hand employed at Walter Peak Station. on the grounds of public interest. Tlie appeal was supported by Colonel P. Mackenzie on behalf of Mackenzie and Sons, who stated that reservist was indispensable.—The appeal was adjourned sine die. Joseph Miller Gibbston (Mr C. H. McKay) appealed on behalf of his son, Alexander Hugh Miller, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appellant said he was over 70 years of age. and could not carry on the farm. He could probably spare bis son for territorial training at a convenient time.—The appeal was dismissed, the reservist to go into camp for territorial training in the period of May-July. The Primary Production Council and Mary Scurr (Mr C. H. McKay) appealed on behalf of Thomas Timothy Scurr, a farmer, of Cardrona, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The reservist said that with the exception of a month he was employed all the year round on the farm. He assisted on his brother’s farm. The best months for territorial training, If he could get away, would be June, July and August.—The appeal was dismissed, the reservist to do territorial training in the months of May, June and July. Moses Jenkins, Crown terrace (Mr C. H. McKay) asked for a rehearing of an appeal on behalf of his nephew, Joseph Reid Stevenson, on the grounds of public interest and undue hardship. The appellant stated that, lie was not able to carry on the farm by himself. If the reservist bad to go to camp tire winter would be the most convenient time. —The board ordered that, reservist go into camp for the period June-August. , , , An appeal by Alex. Reid on behalf of William Robert Dougan was held oyer till next sitting, adequate reason being given by the parties for non-appearance.
