PETROL WASTAGE

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—lf every town in New Zealand uses as much petrol unnecessarily as Tapanui there must be enormous wastage. Our Borough Council has since the war began been tearing up good footpaths and replacing them with concrete, and the gravel for the job is carted by motor lorry some four miles. As these paths have been satisfactory for 60 years, they could last until the end of the war. Although only about 30 people use these paths in a day, they are wide enough for six people to walk abreast. The tradesmen, too, could use horse transport. Most of them have it, but, as petrol is available, they must use it. These people should attempt to do their work with horses, and so should the tradesmen in other country districts. If tanker crews knew about the above they might not take the risks of their calling so readily as they do.—l am, etc., Dobbin. Tapanui, March 7.
