BOWLERS' EFFORT

TOURNAMENT PATRIOTIC FUND OVER £942 RAISED An account of the patriotic fund established at the beginning of thd season in conjunction with the New Zealand tournament which was to have been held in Dunedin in January, was presented by the executive of the New Zealand Bowling Association at a meeting of the presidents and secretaries of the men*s and women's bowling clubs of Dunedin. The president of the New Zealand Bowling Council (Mr J. Forster), who occupied the chair, stated that the council had resolved that the proceeds of the 1941 tournament in Christchurch should be contributed to the patriotic funds, and as a result the sum of £743 13s 8d had been handed over. He was pleased to be able to say that, with the experience of the Christchurch executive as a guide, and in spite of the fact that the Dunedin tournament had been abandoned, no less a sum than £942 9s 8d had been raised by the joint efforts of local bowlers and paid to the Dunedin fund. Had the season not been such a broken one, and had the tournament been held, this amount would probably have been doubled. Mr Forster expressed, on behalf of the Bowling Council, and on behalf of the Dunedin Bowling Centre and the Otago Ladies' Bowling Association, deep appreciation of the loyal support accorded to this patriotic effort t>y local bowlers and thanks to all concerned. A detailed statement showing the funds which would benefit from the local effort and the manner in which the amount had been raised, was presented, and it was stated that this would be circulated among the clubs. The statement showed that £IOO was allocated to the "Comforts for Fighters" Fund. £ls 15s to soldiers parcels, £387 6d to the All Purposes Appeal, £BS 15s 9d to the Red Cross Society for expenditure overseas, and £35 to the same society for its general purposes in New Zealand. The meeting unanimously decided that an amount of £3lB 12s lid, which had not been otherwise disposed of, should be handed to the local branch of the Red Cross Society for the provision of comforts for the disabled soldiers in Montecillo Home. It was further unanimously decided by the meeting to continue the Tournament Patriotic Fund whether or not the tournament was held next season, and the clubs represented at the meeting pledged their enthusiastic support. A joint committee, consisting of the New Zealand Bowling Council Executive, the executive officers of the Dunedin Bowling Centre, and the executive officers of the Otago Ladies' Bowling Association, was set up to sponsor the next appeal. -
