ARMY CRICKET HOME GUARD WINS AGAIN An enjoyable return cricket match was played between the National Military Reserve and the South Oamaru Horne Guard during the week-end, the Home Guard again being successful. The Guard batted first, and valuable contributions were made by Uttley (43), Brooke (35), Fraser (11), and Catto (11) in a total of 127. For the Reserve, bowling honours went to Mcßeath (four for 19) and Turvey (four for 11), while Thompson and Campbell secured one wicket a-plece. The Reserve did not fare so well, and, with the exception of Mcßeath (14) and Heads (10), no other batsman reached double figures, and the side was dismissed for 50 runs. Brooker (four for 15) and Catto (six for 32) shared the bowling for the Home Guard. When time was called the Reserve had reached 85 runs for five wickets, Thompson (46), Molllson (23 not out), and Fallon (10 not out) scoring freely. By taking three wickets'for 17. Brooker again headed the averages, while Hlnkley was the other bowler to secure a wicket. ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN The Tides.—High water at Oamaru today will be at 3.23 a.m. and 3.46 p.m. St. John Ambulance.—ln January, the St. John Ambulance Brigade effected nine removals and travelled 112 miles. There were no accident cases for the month. Trades Union Meeting.—An important trades union meeting will be held to-night at 8 o’clock In the Lyric Board Room, when Mr C. J. Hay. who is travelling through the country as a liaison officer, will address the meeting concerning recent emergency regulations. Questions will be answered by the speaker. County Licences.—During February, the Waitaki'County Council issued one driver’s and four heavy traffic licences. Fall of Snow— Throughout Sunday night snow fell on the ranges at the back of Otekaieke, while on Monday morning there was a fairly thick coating down to about 1000 feet.

SPLENDID RESPONSE APPEAL FOR E.P.S. BEDDING Acknowledging the excellent work of the collectors and the splendid response to the E.P.S. appeal for bedding, the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness), in an interview yesterday morning, said the goods received on Saturday were in excellent condition and reflected great credit on the donors. On behalf of the E.P.S. Committee he thanked the citizens of Oamaru for their splendid response to the appeal for stretchers and bedding. Special thanks, Mr Kirkness said, were due to many citizens who gave a great amount of time and thought to organising and carrying out this drive for supplies. He referred especially to the controller of supplies (Mr R. K. Ireland) and his committee, Mr Hedges and the Hospital Supplies Committee, Mr Burton, an active committee of women who arranged the canvass of the town, and Mr Whyte and the Home Guard who, with Mr Duthie and his staff, arranged the collection. » The Boy Scouts did outstanding work, Mr Kirkness continued, and Mr Richardson and the hospital staff had done a wonderful job In receiving, classifying, and packing the goods ready for future use if needed. If any had been overlooked, he asked them to accept the thanks of the E.P.S. Committee for a great civic service well done. To-day money could not buy the goods so cheerfully loaned by good citizens. FLOWER SHOW DISPLAY OF AUTUMN BLOOMS There will be a fine display of autumn blooms at the Drill Hall to-day, when the North Otago Horticultural Society will hold its autumn flower show. Gladiolus and dahlias, which have become increasingly popular in the district, should provide the most interesting sections and should be of a high standard, while the decorative, fruit and vegetable, and the children’s sections should be worthy of inspection. An added attraction will be the line display from the Public Gardens which should arouse the admiration of all flower lovers. PERSONAL Mr A. McPhail, of the staff of the National Bank at Oamaru, who has been transferred to Alexandra, was the recipient of a presentation and many good wishes from the staff- before his departure to his new sphere of work. Ministerial The Minister of Health (Mr A. H. Nordmeyer), accompanied by Dr L. C. McNickle, director of the hospitals division of the Health Department, paid a visit to Oamaru on Sunday while making a quick inspection of South Island hospitals in connection with emergency arrangements and air raid precautions. The Minister will return to Wellington tomorrow. _ An enjoyable social was held on Saturday in the Meadowbank Bowling Club's pavilion, when members of the Meadowbank Lawn Tennis Club and friends assembled to make a presentation to Miss D. Miller and Mr R. J. Taylor In view of their approachnig marriage. Mr A. R. Tait, president of the club, called upon Mr K. C. McDonald, president of the North Otago Lawn Tennis Association, to make a presentation. Mr McDonald, on behalf of members of the Meadowbank Club and all lawn tennis players, expressed best wishes to the guests, and his remarks were endorsed by Messrs P. T. Mulligan. A. Forrest, N. McQuade, and K. J. Spowart. MR GEOFFREY HODSON Mr Geoffrey Hodson. an international lecturer, will give a public lecture In the Peter Pan Theatre to-morrow night at 8 o'clock. Mr Hodson’s subject will be “ War, Peace and the Future of the Race," and the proceeds of the address will be given to the patriotic funds. The talk is sponsored by the Theosophical Society, of which Mr Hodson is a member, and the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) will preside. Admission Is free, and there will be a collection. AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre.—” Major Barbara,” featuring Wendy Hiller, star of “Pygmalion,” will be shown finally to-night Opera House.—For the change to-night, “ Nearest Thing to Heaven ” wUI be screened, the players being Irene Dunne and Charles Boyer. The first half of the programme will consist of selected short subjects.

INVALIDED HOME Five North Otago soldiers, who have been invalided back from overseas, arrived in Oamaru by the Red Cross train on Saturday. They were Gunner O. L. Carter (Hillgrove), Private A. S. Hellewell (Enfield), Sapper H. J. Lory (Oamaru), Private W. A. Rowell (Oamaru) and Gunner H. Williamson (Waiareka). The transport unit of the Red Cross Society saw to the transport of the soldiers from the station, the Mayor (Mr J. C. Kirkness) also being present to welcome the men. POLICE COURT A sitting of the Police Court was held before Mr James Gerrie, J.P., yesterday morning. Senior Sergeant T. I. McGregor prosecuting for the police. Stanley Eric Todd pleaded guilty to being found drunk on the Oamaru railway station platform, and was convicted and fined £l.—A first offender, arrested on a 'similar charge, was convicted and fined £l.
