DEFENCE WORKS
ALL AVAILABLE MAN-RJWER; STATEMENT BY MINISTER (PA.) WELLINGTON, Feb. 34. • An indication that the- services'-•< ol the Public Work* Department .and tfce Housing .Constructiori Deparlinenl! inay be required almost exclusively in. the near future for the construction of'defence works was given by the Minister of Public Works-and Housing, Mr H. T. Armstrong, in an interview tonight. "The men of the Public Works Department are engaged mainly on defence work now," Mr Armstrong said,' "and it appears that before long they will be engaged solely on work of this nature. Of course, it will, be necessary to retain some men for essential maintenance work. For example, it would be false economy for the Main Highways Board not to maintain the roads. . We have roads under construction which would not be gone on with were it not for the requirements of the defence authorities. " What applies to the Public Works Department also applies to the Housing Construction Department," Mr Armstrong added. "At the same time we want to build every house humanly possible, but defence must take precedence." ■ ' . - ".
