ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
" Harold Ranchman."—No useful purpose „ would be served by the insertion of your letter. " Grateful" and T. A. F. Stone.—We remind you of the intercession that is • daily made in our columns; "F. M. D.," Maheno.—Hector Gray won on Black Duke at Wellington. He subsequently rode the same horse at Wingatui, but did not win. "Raspberry," Brighton.—lt would require more space than is available to answer your question adequately. We suggest that you write to the Horticultural Division of the Department of Agriculture, Chief Post Office building, Dunedin. which will be able to supply you with all the necessary information. " Digger."—You cannot lend or give your revolver to the Home Guard. The army authorities at the Drill Hall, Kensington, will, however, either purchase the weapon from you, or will accept it as a donation with the proviso that it will, if at all possible, be returned to you after the war. No guarantee, however, can be given concerning the return of it. " Inquisitive."—(l) When a person is enrolling in the Emergency Reserve Corps, it is necessary for him to read the declaration on the back of the form, but it is not necessary to take an oath on the Bible. (2) A declaration and an oath are two distinct things. An oath can be taken only before specially authorised persons, such as a magistrate, a justice of the peace, a police officer, etc. There are some witnesses who make affirma- • tions in the court instead of taking the oath, and similarly there are members of Parliament who affirm. " Curious."—lnsurance against war risk will be compulsory in respect of every policy maturing on or after March 1. This applies to both buildings and contents. If a property is not insured the owner of it must apply to an insurance company or to the War Damages Commission in Wellington for a war risk policy not later than March ' 1 next. The rate is 5s on every £IOO or portion of £IOO. The Government does not differentiate between town and country risks.
