Gay Lancer.—lt is understood that Gay Lancer had been sold.

The Cut.—lt is reported that about 60 days' racing will be cut out this season. Increased Cost.—Spreading two days' racing over consecutive Saturdays imposes a good deal of extra cost on owners. Timaru Cup.—lt is reported that the Timaru Cup will carry a stake of £3OO, the same amount as last year. A Fast Race.—The Flying Handicap won at Winton by Fleet Street in lmin 12 2-ssec is one of the fastest sprints ever run in Southland.

At Riccarton.—There is a possibility that the C.J.C. autumn meeting will be held at Riccarton, the inside enclosure only being used. •

Overweight—G. R. Tattersall, whose riding weight was 8.0, tips the beam at 12.4 since becoming a soldier.

Arctic Dawn. —At the midsummer meeting Arctic Dawn was finishing on fast in third place after being badly placed in the early stages. Doria.—The Craven Stakes winner, Doria, was got by Iliad from Princess Doreen, by Chief Ruler—Doree, by Luculls from D'Oro, a sister to Desert Gold. Anglo-French.—The Sir Simper gelding Anglo-French, who won at Winton in his first start over fences, was produced by Lorette, a mare by Tractor—Moulin Rouge, by Kilbroney—Directoire, by Wairiki. '

Restored.—After having cancelled transport facilities for sporting fixtures, the Federal Government has restored the service.

Gloucester Cup.—lt is reported that\the Canterbury Jockey Club is not particularly keen on staging the Gloucester Cup. and it may be run at Riverton. Fleet Street.—The Balboa gelding Fleet Street put up a smart performance by winning over six furlongs at Winton in lmin 12 2-ssec. His dam, Easy Street, was got by Solferina, but has produced only moderate performers. Dual Engagements—Distress Signal, Royal Chorus, Sir Saladin, Craiglea, Astaire, Gay Lancer, Hotch Potch, Melodist, Irish Ruler, Red Feather and Lady Don are engaged in two races at the Gore meeting.

Gay Thread.—With 71b over-weight Gay Thread, who ran second to Dinah Dhu, at the' mid-summer meeting, displayed his best form to date. He is a four-year-old gelding by Lord Quex from Seamstress by Catmint from . the imported mare Slipstitch. Donations.—At a meeting of the committee of the Southland Racing Club it was decided to make a donation of £IOO to the Returned Services' Association Building Fund, and the president, Mr W. T Hazlett, said he would make a similar donation.

In the Money.—Winners at Winton with engagements at Gore are: Sir Sajadin, Helpmate, Anglo-Irish, Filibeg and Fleet Street. Place getters are: Marquee, Ageratum, Socks, Judy O'Grady, Wild Career, Hotch Potch, Amor Lad, Symbol, Irish Ruler and Melodist.

Sir Saladin.—The Salmagundi gelding Sir Saladin, who won at Winton and is engaged at Gore, was produced by Cetchela, an Australian-bred mare got, by Cetigne, a winner of the A.J.C. Derby and V.R.C. Newmarket Handicap.

Novices.—Among those engaged in the Trial Plate to be run at Gore include several horses that are more or less unknown. Comforter is a filly by Man's Pal from Universal, a half-sister to Queen of Song; Hollyford is a three-year-old gelding by Salmagundi—Ace of Hearts by The Ace; Pianiste is a filly by Gustavo—Saxophone by Nigger Minstrel; Royal Brief is a colt by Solicitor-Gene-ral—Lady Violet by Boniform; and Sally Sage is a filly by Philamor—lnsolence by Solferino. I

Southern Sail.—The Iliad mare Southern Sail, who. is top-weight in the President's Handicap at Gore, has won each of her three races this season. She won the Waihopai Handicap, the Southland Handicap with 7.12, and the Wyndham Cup with 7.0 in 2min ssec. In the Wyndham Cup Southern Sail beat Anglo-Irish and at Gore meets him on 111 b worse terms for a neck beating.

Fast Going.—The Riccarton track under ordinary weather conditions is faster for the mid-summer meeting than at any other time. Prior to Saturday's meeting trainers avoided making use of the outside of the course proper for training operations because the going was considered too hard. .

Distress Signal.—The Rocket gelding Distress Signal, who has accepted for Gore, has. started 12 times, this season, and has been three times second and twice in third place. He won twice last season, and ran into a place three' times. He won a maiden at Levin, and in his final start won the Otaki Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Manawatu meeting. This season he has been racing over hurdles. He is a four-year-old gelding by Rocket—Pandia, by Chief Ruler—Panpipes, by Panmure—Pas Seul, by Soult.

The Gore Meeting.—There is a considerable reduction in some of the fields at Gore,..but they remain quite ample to supply an attractive card. Spanish Lad, Boaform, Islay Downs, Heidelberg, Symbol, Taxpayer, Sing Sing, Aspire and Atua Rere dropped out of the President's Handicap, leaving a field of eight. Boaform, Night Pal, Islay Downs and Queen Beth were withdrawn from the Borough Handicap, leaving a field of 11, including Craiglea, who is also in the President's Handicap. The field for the Trial Handicap totals 25, or 4 more than the safety number, and the Autumn Hack Handicap, 17 or 2 more than the safety margin.
