OBITUARY

< MR ARTHUR VARNEY

Mr Arthur Varney, who has resided at Macandrew Bay for the past two years and died suddenly on Monday at the age of 71, was well known some years ago in educational circles in New Zealand. He was educated tit Saltley College, Birmingham, and then entered the teaching profession and secured an appointment at Leeds. He came to New Zealand when 33 years of age On a health trip, and, deciding to reside in the Dominion, secured the position of science master at the High School, Victoria avenue, Wanganui. He later became director of the Traiping School in Wanganui, and was responsible for the organisation which raised funds for the erection of the present-day Wanganui Technical College. Later he was appointed general secretary Of the Y.M.C.A. at Wellington,, and was then appointed national general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. * This was during the last war, and it was about this period that Mr Varney paid a visit to England and France. On his return to New Zealand he became secretary %} a number of concerns in Wellington, and was for several years secretary ox the Wellington Cricket : Council v ;.;Mr Varney was an enthusiastic, follower, of sport, particularly cricket and; football. About two years ago he retired, and took- up his residence at IMsu> andrew Bay. He became intensely interested in patriotic work, and Mr A C. Cameron, when referring at the meeting of the Metropolitan Zone Committee yesterday afternoon to v. his death, said that he had been the life and soul of tnis work in Peninsula district. Mr J. J. Nyhon, chairman of the .Peninsula County Council, also referred tovthe patriotic work which bad-been accomplished by Mr Varney oh the OtagdiPenmsula, and it'was decided; i'ta ssaaßijg-letter of sympathy' to/the relative* "of, the deceased.
