FAMINE IN GREECE

ABOUT 900 DEATHS A DAY EFFECT OF GERMAN PILLAGE (Rec. 6.30 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Feb. 7. Food shipments, it is expected, will be made to Greece shortly, as an experiment, but these will alleviate only slightly the serious famine there. According to a statement by the Greek Legation, the average number of deaths from starvation each day in Greece is about 900. Trucks go about Athens and other cities every morning gathering the bodies, of persons who died on the previous day. Washington officials state that a ship is to leave Turkey with 8000 tons of cereals for Greece. This shipment has been arranged by Britain, but it will do little to av,ert what is described as the grimmest tragedy of the war. The. famine has resulted from the German pillage of Greece.
