BURMA FRONT ENEMY READY TO ATTACK (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 6. In Burma the Japanese appear to be ready to attempt a crossing of the Salween River in the vicinity of Paan. The R.A.F. made two heavy attacks on enemy forces in this area. The Japanese sent small' parties across the river in some places, but there has yet been any engagement on a large scale.
SINGAPORE SIEGE NO LAND ATTACKS AS YET (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 6. Most of the Australian soldiers who took part in the earlier actions are now safe on Singapore Island. According to a statement by the Australian Minister for the Army, Mr F. M. Forde, the fighting qualities of these men were warmly praised by General Wavell and Major-general Bennett. Whenever they met the Japanese they proved themselves more than a match, man to man. Major-general Bennett said that the casualties were not as heavy as were feared. ROMMEL'S ADVANCE VICHY RADIO REPORT (Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 8. The Vichy radio stated that Fieldmarshal Rommel's forces are only 25 miles from Tobruk. SAMARINDA OCCUPIED BY JAPANESE (Rec. 2 a.m.) LONDON, Feb. 6. A Batavia communique reports that the Japanese have occupied Samarinda, 60 miles north of Balik Papan, on the east coast of Borneo.
