NEW WAR LOAN

AUSTRALIA'S FINANCES (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) CANBERRA, Feb. 6. A new Commonwealth war loan of £35,000.000 will be opened for subscription on February 17. It will be issued at par and will bear interest at 2J per cent., maturing in 1945-6, or at 3| per cent., maturing in 1950-8. Figures compiled by the Commonwealth Statistician show that savings bank deposits increased from £244,284,000 at the eind of 1940 to £266,096,000 at the end of 1941. Increased earnings, fewer avenues for spending, and the desire to save, which is general in almost all countries in war-time, have been the main factors in raising the nation's savings.
