YOUTH DELINQUENCY
PERTURBATION CAUSED "The members of my board are concerned at what appears to be a decline in the moral standards of the youth of the Dominion as reflected in the figures for delinquencies shown in the report of the Child Welfare Department,” stated a letter from the Wanganui Education Board, read at a meeting of the Wellington Education Board. “My board feels that this is a matter of sufficient importance to warrant discussion at the next conference of education boards, and to this end it proposes to obtain information in this district regarding the number of children who are receiving religious instruction under various approved schemes.” Some members suggested that because of the shortage of staff the time was not opportune for the collection of a mass of detailed information. There was general agreement that the position was serious, although it was considered that it might well be that not all the culprits came from the State schools. The root of the trouble was thought to be lack of parental control.
It was agreed to ask the executive to prepare information for submission to the board at its next meeting.
