ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The monthly, meeting of the council of the Otago Acclimatisation Society was held last night, the president (Mr R. Fountain) occupying the chair. Shooting Season The council recommended that an open season for Californian quail should be declared this year as follows: —Vincent and Maniototo Counties, May 2 to July 31 (increased by one month); Taieri and Waihemo Counties (except that portion of the Taieri County on the seaward side of the main highway south of Dunedin). May 2 to May 31; Waikouaiti and Clutha Counties, closed season. It was also recommended that the season for chukor should be increased by one month, the season to be from May 2 to July 31. The season for other game, it was decided. should be the same as last season, as follows;—Mallard duck, Canadian goose, grey duck, spoonbill duck pukeko, black swan (not to be shot in Waihemo County), and paradise duck (except in Taieri, Waikouaiti, Waihemo, Clutha, Bruce, and Tuapeka Counties), May 2 to May 17; godwits, absolutely protected. • Change of Name The council decided to recommend a change of name, the society to be called the Otago Wild Life Protection and Acclimatisation Society.—Mr J. M. Paterson, who moved the resolution, said the new name would more truly indicate the aims of the society and would meet some very ill-natured criticism that had been going on. Members agreed that the change was desirable, and it was decided to bring the council’s recommendation before the next annual meeting for consideration.
