MAORI BOY DROWNED

TRIED. TO RECOVER OAR A drowning accident involving a young Maori boy occurred on Lake Rotorua. The victim was Tamati Kowhai, aged 13, of Rotorua. Kowhai, with a party of four other boys, had secured a small boat and set off from Hinemoa Point and rowed halfway across the lake to Mokoia Island. When the boys were returning, an oar slipped out of the rowlock and floated away from the boat. One of Kowhai’s companions dived in to retrieve it. but could not reach it. Kowhai dived in also and succeeded in reaching the oar. but by this time the boat had drifted away from him. After swimming a few strokes he disappeared under the water and was not seen again by his companions.
