FRUIT AND VEGETABLES AUSTRALIAN LEMONS ARRIVE DROP IN TOMATO PRICES Heavier supplies of stone fruit have been* arriving from Central Otago and prices have eased. ’, Only fair supplies, however, of crate peaches have come to hand,*and most of the-ease peaches are not; ’of high quality. Apricots of the Newcastle variety attract most attention. Other kinds of apricots are a little on the hard side, and these are not so easily placed. The shipment of Australian lemons which was carried past Dunedin to Wellington has now come to hand. These sold quickly at the very high prices ruling. Tomatoes have shown a sharp drop in prices, as fairly large quantities have now reached the wholesale marts. Supplies! however, cased off a little at the week-end.

The season for strawberries, gooseberries and currants is now just about finished.

The plums coming forward arc only of moderate quality. The market could’do with larger supplies of higher grade quality plums. The season for cherries must have proved satisfactory to growers, as supplies have been fairly heavy and prices have been well maintained throughout. Raspberries have a keen demand and high prices arc being obtained. Supplies have hardly been equal to the demand.

With supplies of peas coming from all quarters, prices have shown a considerable drop. Up to the present high values have been ruling in the marts. Supplies of potatoes have been somewhat irregular during the week, the broken weather no doubt being accountable for this. The fixation of the wholesale price at 2Jd per lb and the retail figure at 3£d has resulted in a keener demand. Household gardens are now commencing to supply potatoes to their owners, and this supply should increase from now on. Lettuces are in over supply, and even the best quality are slow of sale. The market could absorb larger quantities of marrows. Cabbages are plentiful, but supplies of sound quality cauliflowers are not sufficient for the demand. Parsnips and beetroot are now commencing to reach the marts. Broad beans and carrots are more plentiful. Wholesale prices are as follows: Oranges: Unobtainable.

New Zealand-lemons, 13s to 22s per case; Australian, 28s to 47s according to count. .

Peaches: Crates, 5d to 6Jd per lb: cases, 6s to 7s; cookers, 4s to 5s per case. Apricots: Cases, 6s to 8s; trays, 6d per lb. Bananas: Unobtainable.
