JAPANESE CONSUL
TRIPS TO PLAY GOLF USE OF 12-CYLINDER CAR COUNCILLORS’ ALLEGATIONS (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. Complaints that the Japanese! Consul was making frequent trips in a 12cylinder car to Makara to play golf, and that the army was wasting petrol by the needless running of trucks while members of the council could not get . petrol to bring them tc meetings, were made at a meeting ol the Makara County Council to-day. It was decided to draw the attention of the Minister of Supply, Mr D. G. Sullivan, to the trips of the consul and to ask the Minister if local body administration was to cease for want of petrol. , . ~ The chairman said that, when told by his son that the car contained the Japanese Consul, he did not believe it. but satisfied himself that it was the consul by watching him through glasses while he was playing golf with “ his bodyguard.” Councillors quoted instances they had observed of, army vehicles running about practically empty, and an example was given, of one making a special trip of 150 yards to collect two or three soldiers who could have walked.
