THE GERMAN SOLDIER

WILTS UNDER PRESSURE According to a Dunedin lance-cor-poral some New Zealand soldiers have not a great deal of respect for the German soldier when met on equal terms. Writing to his parents, he states that the German is a good, efficient soldier when everything is in his favour, but is unable to withstand real opposition. “ Jerry kicked up a big fuss, but he is pretty timid.” he writes, “ and, if he can’t keep you at arm’s length, which he tries to do with a terrific barrage, will hop it, or ‘ kamerad.' Night-time finds him as nervous as a cat. He puts up flares all night, and if he thinks he sees or hears anything, he lets go with just about everything he has.

I “ His morale, I believe, is almost as low as that of the Italians —in this part of the world, anyway. He is a good, efficient soldier when handing it out to those who have not the wherewithal with which to hit back, but when it gets tough on him, he doesn’t like it. That is my opinion of Mr Jerry.”
