“THE LIMITS OF CRITICISM”

TO THE EDITOR Sir, —I agree entirely with the views expressed by your correspondent “ Sleeves Up,” but surely he is mistaken in taking seriously the press opinions quoted by him, other choice specimens of which appear in your issue of this morning. The Daily Mail is notoriously the pioneer of the papers which set out to cater for those members of the community who prefer sensation to accuracy, and ready-made opinions, however ignorant and unreliable, to thinking for themselves. The Daily Express is also a leading member of what is known as “ the stunt press.” The Prime Minister’s reply to Mr Doidge is, as “ Sleeves Up” says, contemptible, but since this country, Mr Fraser included, chooses to be governed by a coterie of trade union secretaries rather than by its own personally elected representatives, it must put up with the consequences. —I am, etc., Errian. Dunedin, January 16.
