Vice-Regal Their Excellencies the GovernorGeneral (Sir Cyril Newall) and Lady Newall arrived by the 4.18 express yesterday afternoon on a brief visit to the city. They are the guests of Sir Lindo and Lady Ferguson. Last evening their Excellencies attended a combined parade of the Home Guard and the Woman's War Service Auxiliary. After inspecting the Red Cross headquarters they met members of the Emergency Precautions Service in the Town Hall. Their Excellencies will inspect other war activities today, and will be accorded a civic reception at Port Chalmers this afternoon. They will leave for Gore tomorrow morning.

Mr James Fletcher arrived from Auckland yesterday. Mr William Helm, of Ranfurly, has received a cablegram from his son, Lance-corporal A. J. Helm, stating that he is well.

Advice has been received that Signaller A. Riach, who left with the First Echelon, is safe and well. Mr and Mrs J. Carroll have received word that Iheir sons, Sergeant-major G. Carroll and Sapper C. Carroll, are both safe and well.

Word has been received by his parents that Private Alexander Fraser, of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, who has been through the Libyan campaign, is safe and well.

Staff Sergeant A. G. Lowry, formwhich have just been Gazetted, enstructors' cadre, has been posted to a New Zealand battalion for overseas duty with the rank of quartermastersergeant. Lieutenant Richard H. Raistrick, R.A.O.C, has been promoted to the rank of captain and awarded the M.B.E. (Military Division) for distinguished services in the Middle East. His relatives, Mrs Aldersely and family, reside at Main road, Lower Hutt. Passengers for the north by air yesterday were Mr F. H. Maher for Christchurch, and Mrs A. W. Moodie, Miss R. Farquharson. Mrs G. B. Gray, Mrs W. Callander, Miss D. Harris, and Mrs K. Simmonds for Wellington. Passengers who arrived by the afternoon plane were Mr James Fletcher from Auckland, Mrs G. Wyber from Wellington, Mrs H. E. Burton, Mrs Benfield, Mr R. Elmes, and Mr R. N. Evernden from Christchurch.

Flying Officer G. E. Milnes, who was mentioned in despatches in the New Year -Honours List, is the son of Mr and Mrs E. Milnes, of Merivale, Christchurch. The action recognised in this way was the rescue of the personnel of a Wellington bomber in the Middle East. Flying Officer Milnes graduated Bachelor of Science at the University of Otago, and was studying chemistry at the University of London during the Czechoslovak crisis of 1938. He joined the university squadron of the Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve, and when war broke out a year later he was called up for service. He was attached to a Bomber Command squadron at first, but latterly has been serving in the Middle East.

• For a number of years past the Canterbury Agricultural College Old Students' Association has made available a scholarshio valued at 25gns to a South Island member of the Young Farmers' Club movement. Mr A. C. Cameron, chairman of the committee appointed to select the scholarship holder, announces that Angus Walter McKav, of Methven, has received the honour for 1942. Mr McKay, who was selected from a number of applicants, is a son of Mr A. J. McKay, of "Thr.se Springs," Methven, himself one of the most enterprising fanners in the district. This year's scholarship holder has just completed his fourth year at the Methven District High School, having passed his public service entrance examination in 1940, and is at present awaiting results of the matriculation examination.
