THE CABLE SERVICES

VITAL FOR SECURITY REASONS MERGER WITH WIRELESS (Rec. 7 p.m.) CANBERRA, Jan. 6. The Federal Government is completing plans for the merging of all Australian cable and wireless telegraph services. The Government will be represented on the organisation controlling the merged services. The revenues from both the cable and wireless services will be paid into a pool. Any losses on the cable services will be offset by the profit from the wireless services. T .he Government fears that the extension of the wireless telegraph services may make the cable services uneconomic, threatening their continuance. The cable services are regarded as vital for security reasons.
