PERSONAL Ministerial The Minister of Health. Mr A. H. Nordmeyer, is at present in Oamaru. He was at the Social Security Office last night attending to his constituents’ affairs. Mr and Mrs H. J. Ewing, Five Forks, have received word that their son, Private Cliff Ewing, who was wounded previously, has been seriously wounded in the Libyan campaign. Mr and Mrs Hill, of Duntroon, have received a cablegram from their son. Driver William • Hill, saying that he is safe and well On Thursday, January 1, Skipper Francis will be in attendance at the Oamaru Public Baths to teach swimming. He will be in Oamaru for about a week. Mr and Mrs D. Giffin. of France street, Oamaru. have received a letter from their, son. Private W. Giffin. who is a prisoner of war in Germany, stating that he is well treated and in good health. Mr and Mrs Frank Hood, of Ngapara, have received word that their son. Private J. V. Hood, is making a good recovery from wounds in the left arm and chest received near Tobruk on November 23 Visitors to the Town Queen’s Hotel.—Mr A. Eller and Mrs I. Hilllker (Dunedin). ITEMS OF INTEREST IN AND ABOUT TOWN Home League.—The Salvation Army Home League had a wind-up social after a successful year. An Interesting prog ram me was presented by the choir, senior oys and girls (items). Home League members (play), Mesdames Souness. Keith, Colville and Miss Ngalre Ormandy (songs), and Mesdames Wright, Gribben and party ("Hayseeds”). Mesdames Burgess, Reid. Rawcllffe, Wright and Tinkin were thanked for their services during the year, and thrift' money was distributed. Church Services.—|n response to the suggestion by the King, that the British people should join with the people of the United States in making New Year's Day a day of prayer, brief services will be held. at St. Paul’s at 11 a.m., and at Columba at 7.30 p.m. to-morrow. Services will also be held at St. Luke’s.
NEW YEAR RACING MEETINGS AtTwAIKOUAITI AND OAMARU There should be good holiday racing at New Year, both at Waikouaiti to-morrow and at Oamaru on Friday. The petrol restrictions should not greatly affect the attendances, as there are ample trains running from Dunedin and Oamaru to Waikouaiti to-morrow, and a special train will leave Dunedin at 8.27 a.m. on Friday for Oamaru. LAWN TENNIS The following are the results of the matches In the Christmas lawn tennis tournament, which have been completed since last Saturday:— Women’s Doubles Championship.—Miss D. Miller and I. Gunn beat Misses E. Miller and R. Corrigal 6—5, 6 —4. Women’s Doubles Handicap.—Mesdames Minifie and McLauchlan beat Misses E. Miller and R. Corrigal 9—B. Men’s Singles Handicap.—J. Collins beat Crawford 9—B. AMUSEMENTS Majestic Theatre. —" Waterloo Bridge,” with Vivien Leigh and Robert Taylor, will be shown finally to-night. At a matinee to-morrow and to-morrow night the comedy " Sis Hopkins ” will be screened. This features Judy Canova. Opera House. —To-night and to-morrow night the holiday programme will consist of “ Men of the Tlmberlands.” with Richard Arlen and Andy Devine. For the comedy section, Brian Aherne and Kay Francis will appear In ” The Man Who Lost Himself."
