TWO BROTHERS DROWNED

Two brothers were drowned at Whangape, North Auckland, when the flat-bottomed boat in which they were attempting to cross from Whangape to Mitimiti capsized. The victims were:— Mr Tom Kendall, aged 22, and Mr George Kendall, aged 17. In making the crossing, the brothers had two horses on leads behind the boat. One man clung to the boat when it capsized in the deep water near the Mitimiti shore, but, seeing his brother in difficulties, he released his grip on the boat to attempt a rescue. Hampered by their reavy riding clothes, the brothers soon disappeared, although they were reputed to be good swimmers.
