MYSTERY COMEDY FEATURE Directed by Albert S. Rogell, the Universal release “ The Black Cat,” to be screened at the St. James Theatre tomorrow, provides something unusual In the way of entertainment, and for a picture of its type it Is definitely worth while seeing. The golden thread of romance Is delightfully woven through sequences of chills, mystery and comedv which surround the life of the mistress of the sinister Windsor estate who has an obsession for providing a home for stray cats. She is suddenly murdered after reading her will. The telephone is mysteriously disconnected, and the place is marooned by a raging storm. Meanwhile two more murders occur. Basil Rathbone, probably as well known for his suave screen and radio detective work as Sherlock Holmes, heads the cast, Hugh Herbert leads the comedy team, and Brod Crawdord, star of “ Seven Sinners,” and Bela Lugosi of “ Dracula ” fame, fill prominent roles. Gale Sondergaard and Anne Gwynne are also importantly The associate feature, “ The Singing Hill,” *is a film of the west, in which Gene Autry again proves his ability to captivate an audience. Playing opposite Autry is Virginia Dale, and others in the cast are Smiley Burnette and Mary Lee. Packed with action and adventure, - the film is one of the best of the western series to be presented in Dunedin.
