HOUSE REFUSE
AUCKLAND SUBURBS COLLECTION STOPPED (Special) AUCKLAND. Dec. 17. Notification of the cancellation until further notice of refuse collections in the outlying city districts has been given in Auckland. Owing to the petrol and manpower shortages, no collection will be made in future in Tamaki, Orakei, Remuera, Epsom, Grey Lynn, Avondale, Point Chevalier and the western section of Herne Bay. Refuse will still be cleared from commercial premises in these districts.
The main city area will continue to receive the existing services. Refuse from the city districts other than those mentioned will be cleared one day a week.
“ I view it with a certain amount of misgiving and alarm,” said the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board. Mr Allan J. Moody, when asked to comment on the decision. He said that while the board was not directly concerned, a matter of public health was involved. The board had just cleared the Auckland Hospital to make room for possible casualties, and might be faced with further trouble in the way of an epidemic, perhaps of summer sickness.
“It appears to me an. ill-advised move," he added. “ Surely the health of the community is of paramount importance. I know no more important work than guarding the citizens’ health.’’ Mr Moody expressed the opinion that some people might not bury or burn refuse thoroughly. This might result in rats and flies congregating, to the detriment of public health.
