REPRESENTATIVE CRICKET
OTAGO MATCHES ABANDONED In the light of a recommendation from the New Zealand Cricket Council, a meeting of the Otago Cricket Association last night decided to abandon the representative fixtures it had arranged for this season. The decision means that the Otago and Canterbury match at Chrisfchurch and the Otago-Southland match at Dunedin at Christmas and New Year respectively will not be played and that, even if the Brabin Shield junior tournament should be v held, Otago will 'not take part in it. The president (Mr F. N. Binney) said that recent events in the Pacific had " put a different complexion on things." The Prime Minister had appealed for a curtailment of travelling and, in any event, it would be difficult to select a strong team. The Otago association had asked the New Zealand council to give a lead, and he thought it was a wise one. The meeting made its decision unanimously on the motion of Mr W. A. Rowland, seconded by Mr J. A. Robson.
A sub-committee was appointed to investigate the possibility of arranging informal matches between Dunedin players on December 26 and 27 and January 1 and 2. The meeting was attended by Messrs Binney. Rowland, Robson, W. S. Armitage, H. Harvey, J. M. Kennedy, L. J. Groves, A. R. Knight and E. Hayes.
