RUMANIAN OIL

PRODUCTION DWINDLING (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, Dec. 15. Publication of the most recent official statistics of Rumanian oil production in the technical newspaper Monitorul Petroleumia Rumania reveals a decreased output on the Rumanian oilfields. The period covered is 1932-1941. Since 1936 the output has, declined 40 per cent., and it is emphasised that this is not due, as has so often been alleged since the war began, to political causes—mainly neglect of the oilfields by western capitalistic groups—but to natural causes and the natural approaching exhaustion of the oilwells. The year 1936 was the peak year for production, which amounted to 8,700,000 tons. In 1937 it dropped to 7,100,000, in 1938 to 6,600,000, in 1939 to 6,200,000, and in 1940 to 5,750,000. Experts say that the output for 1941 will not exceed 5,200,000 tons.
