DELIVERY OF BREAD
CITY JVREA ELUDED (PA.) CIERISTGHURCH, Dec. 15. At the urgent request of the Wheat and Flour Controller (Mr R. McPherson), the Ghristchurch metropolitan bakers met to-day to devise means of conserving petrol and man-power. Conferences' r.were also held by the controller With the president (Mr John Railton) and members of the executive of the' :Master. Grocers' Association, and the'president (Mr E. Guthrie) and executive of the Canterbury Fruitbuyers' Association. After a full discussion, it was decided that the private delivery of bread in the metropolitan area should' cease as from January 5. Although bakers were reluctant to relinquish the goodwill' built up over so'; many years with private customers, they felt compelled to make" this effort in the national emergency. Arrangements will be made to deliver brea<J in extreme necessitous cases, such as sickness and old age. An extra burden will be thrown on grocers, dairies and other distributors, ■.} but these have willingly I agreed to &6, their share as a contribution to the war effort. The public will save delivery charges, and will be able to get its bread at the cash-over-the-counter price. .Bakers are.taking this step in the full confidence that the public will accept the small inconveniences as a set off against the great national saving in petrol and man-power. Bakers in other centres , have received the same ' request from the Wheat and Flour Controller, and discussions are now in irain. ,' ■ : ..y-.. .-r- ■ '"' . : ' '
