January 2. 3.—Southland R.C. Iceland Spar.—lt has been decided to spell Iceland Spar until after the holiday meetings. At Invercargill.—A lengthy list of nominations was received for the Southland Racing Club's summer meeting. On Call.—The winners at Hororata included On Call, whose previous win was as a three-year-old in 1939 at Gore. College Girl. —The Hororata Novice Stakes winner College Girl is a five-year-old by Roydon from Gorgeous, the dam of PeacockBronwen.—lt is reported that Bronwen has been training on satisfactorily for her engagement in the Railway Handicap, which she has won twice during the oast two years. . A Low Scale.—A rather low scale of weights has been adopted in the Dunedin Handicap. A slightly higher scale is preferable because it gives the more experienced riders a mount on two-year-olds. A Loss.—The Hororata meeting will mean a loss to the club, which was foreseen, but it was decided to carry on to keep faith with owners, trainers, riders, and the residents of the district. • Don Roy.—The Roydon gelding Don Roy, who won .at Hororata, got amongst ■ the money for the first time since he deadheated with Force in the Novice Stakes at the Waimate Hunt meeting. Muffler.—When he won at Hororata, Muffler carried 8.2, and not 8.9, as appeared in the telegraphed report of the meeting. Lunaria carried 7.12, and Dinah Dhu IS. including a 51b allowance. R. C. Miles.—Among the names of members of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force killed in action in the fighting in Libya is that of Sergeant Reginald Charles Miles, former well-known jumping jockey. Before increasing weight caused him- to relinquish riding, Miles was a very capable horseman, and he: was highly popular among racing men. Invercarglll Meeting.—The following nominations were received for the Invercarglll Cup' Handicap, of £550, one mile and a-quarter:—Airline, Anglo Irish, Bow Street, Chandelier, Fidelis, Fdxette, Globe Trotter, Gay Lancer. Heidelberg. Hearth, Irish Ruler, Night Pal, Secret Flight, Southern Sail, Spanish Lad, Strip. The Joker, Treasurer. Wild Career.

Winning Flight—ln the Dunedin Handicap Winning Flight, who is top-weight with 8.4, won the McLean Stakes with 8.0 in 48 l-ssec, a track record. She started favourite for the Welcome Stakes, but went amiss and did not run up to form. Neptune.—A son of Hyperion in Neptune, a half brother to the Derby winner, Blue Peter, has been purchased by Messrs Wright, Stephenson, and Co., Ltd., at 2000 guineas on behalf of Mr J. G. Alexander. Neptune will join Coronach at the Cranleigh Stud. Treasurer.—When Treasurer won the Cressy Handicap, run on the last day of the New Zealand Cup meeting, he carried 8.5, and won going away from Haughty Winner 9.5, in lmiri 38sec. In' the Otago Handicap, Haughty Winner comes hi' on' 41b better terms over an extra two furlongs and a-half. A Difference.—The simultaneous appearance of the weights for Wingatui and Waikouaiti shows that Haughty Winner meets Strip on 71b worse terms in the Waikouaiti Cup than he does in the Otago Handicap. ; The margin between them at Wingatui is 61b and at Waikouaiti 131 b. Iceland Spar meets Haugftty Winner on 51b better.terms at Waikouaiti than at Wingatui. Such margins might not occur if the handicaps for Waikouaiti were declared after the two days' racing at Wingatui. If the Waikouaiti opinion is - correct then has;, no change with ; Haughty Winner in the Otago Handicap, and the latter on the other hand reads to be at the mercy of the Valkyrian- gelding at Waikouaiti.! 1 ' ' ■ ', •:' Money Bird.—ln recent years the Wingatui stables have not been strong in two-year-olds, and at present the number in-training at Wingatui is on the small side. One that is showing promise is Money Bird, trained by D. J. McDonald for Mr R. Green Money Bird was got by< Paper Money from Wingatui, by Tractor—Marianne, by Kenilworth, a French, bred horse that got some good winners in Australia, notably Kenwagwhair, a winner of the Sydney Cup and Metropolitan Handicap. Money. Bird is. a brown with white markings, and indicates his sire by his appearance. He has the gift of galloping, and with ordinary lUck should prove more than useful. Wingatui Won the rtiverton Cup in 1929, Symbol.—The top-weight in the Milburn Handicap, Symbol, is a black filly in C. McCarthy's stable. She had two unplaced performances as a two-year-old, and last season won her first three races

and was also placed twice in three other starts. She began with a dead-heat with Nightglass at North Canterbury and followed with a win at Banks Peninsula Her third win was in the Randolph Hack Handicap, run at Riccarton. where she won with 8.7 from Leighnor Bi6i, and Wild Coon 7.8 over seven furlorigs in lmin 26sec. She followed with a third in the Stonyhurst Handicap with 7.7 to Doria 8.6 and Poutatau 7.0, and in her final placed performance was second with 7.0 to Schoolgirl 7.8, beaten by a length over seven furlongs at Ashburton in lmin 24 3-ssec. Symbol was got by Gascony— Symballs, by Psychology—Symbolism, by Symington. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES Decembei 26.—Ashburton T.C. December 26.—Gore T.C \ Decembei 26, 27.—Westpon T.C. Decembei 27.—Winton T.C December 27 30. 31.—Auckland T.C Modesty.—Forty-two nominations were received for the Trial Handicap, a 3min 43sec class, to be run at Gore. It is a modest beginning, and i the race will be run as two separate races. Integrity.—ln the Snowden Trot at Hororata Integrity started favourite, but lost a lot of ground by whipping round at the start. Big Improvement.—Cold Steel, who beat Integrity at Hororata is a four-year-old by Rey de Ore—Judith, owned by Messrs T. and G. Evans. The winner went 3min 27sec from a 3min 43sec mark.

All Serene.—The Rey de Oro' gelding All Serene, who won at Hororata, gave an indication of a possible success by his fourth to Premier Royal, Loyal Jack, and Follow Me at Forbury Park. On that occasion All Serene went around a 3min 20sec gait ...'_,.. „ Ashburton.—The military authorities have taken over the Ashburton -course and the meeting on Boxing Day will have to be held elsewhere. No doubt an effort will be made to obtain the use of Adding.jton . ■.,_.. \. •.»'■, '..- ' ,i '-■• f~ Rongomai.—The Nelson Derby - mare Rongomai, who won several races for Mr G. J. Barton before being sold to a Perth sportsman, won the National Park Han-, dicap at Gloucester Park last month.

Rongomai, who was at long odds, won by a foot from Serene Derby, with the hot favourite Tennessee Wood a foot away third. Sheik, winner of the 1924 New Zealand Trotting Cup, was represented by three winners—Bonnie Arabian, Adonis Sheik, and Lord Sheik. RICCARTON NOTES HOLIDAY PLANS (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 15. The Riccarton horses who N are to race at North Island holiday meetings are booked to leave here on Thursday. It is not certain, however, that all of the trainers will carry on with the trip. T. H. Gillett. who has Doria, Palfrey and Dividend nominated at Auckland, is still considering his- programme. Doria and Palfrey have been entered at Waikouaiti and Oamaru, while if the visit to the North Island is abandoned Dividend may contest the chief flat events at Greymouth. While J. H. Prosser was disappointed when he missed the nominations for some of the shorter races, his present intention is to visit Auckland with Eulogist for. the distance events. F. A. Roberts (with Salutation and Not Out), P. V. Mason (with Hinepo) and Mrs J. Campbell (with Wardress) seem to be definitely booked for Auckland. H. Cutts expects to have Wild Talk, Wild Fox and Court Dress, with Shikari or the two-year-old Straight Bat, as the fourth member of a team for Manawatu and Wairarapa. C. B. Dawson may do the same trip with a couple of two-year-olds. Cross Question and Wedding Ring. The Riccarton apprentice S. Green, who will go north with F. A. Roberts, has five rides on the first day of. the Auckland meeting They are Round Up, Salutation, Gay, Genet, Beaucoup and one of J. H. Jefferd's two-year-olds. Iceland Spar has not pleased F. D. Jones in the last few weeks, and he was lame after a gallop on Thursday. It has therefore been decided not to persevere with him, and he will be turned out for a long spell. According to present arrangements, it is unlikely that he will be raced again, until next spring. The two-year-old Chestnut Glow has not done well lately, and she has been sent home for a spell, after which she will be prepared for next season. In the meantime, her place in F. D. Jones's stable has been taken by Lord Lynn, who has had a long rest. ' With Iceland Spar and Chestnut Glow out of commission. F. D. Jones will do no holiday racing. Apart from this pair, Miss Saone is the only member of his team with an engagement, and her form does not make her look a good six-furlong prospect at Oamaru. E. J. Jennings has lost another of his team as Real Comet broke down last week in one of his fore joints. He is a six-year-old gelding who might have made a Jumper had he remained sound. L. J. Ellis will ride Yogi in the Auckland Cup. while F. C. Cleaver will be on Wardress. Globe Trotter has arrived here from the North Island, and has joined the stable of C. G. Humphries. '..'.' MANAWATU MEETING POSTPONEMENT ANNOUNCED (P.A.) PALMERSTON N., Dec. 15: The Manawatu Racing Club has decided, in view of the occupation of the Awa j. course by the military authorities, to pone the Christmas meeting until a suitable date and arrangements can be made.
