GRADE CRICKET

TWO EXCITING FINISHES NARROW WINS TO OLD BOYS AND CARISBROOK B Two exciting finishes characterised grade cricket in Dunedin on Saturday. The weather was brilliantly fine, and for the first time this season wickets and outfields were reasonably fast. It was really the first opportunity of the season for bright cricket, and spectators at the matches between Carisbrook B and University, and Old Boys and Albion-Y.M.C.A. were treated to' highly exciting finishes. University began the last over of the day wanting four runs to equal Carisbrook B’s total of 173, and with three wickets in hand. Over-eagerness outweighed judgment, however, and R. O. Talbot clean bowled one batsman with his third ball and another with the last ball of the day. University’s score was 170 for nine wickets, three short of a tie. Carisbrook B started disastrously, losing three wickets for 11 runs; but A. T. Anderson 36) and B. W. Gherman (26) made a good recovery, and then J. R. Nimmo, hitting with great power, scored 55 in quick time. Mowat was University's hardest-worked bowler and he took four wickets for 5.9 runs. JL. C, Baker, a tall left-hander, batted attractively for 63 and gave University a fine winning chance. F. K. Rennie hit vigorously for 35, and T. M. C. Hay (22j and A. N. Lawson (21 not ’out) almost saved the day. Talbot (four for 51) and Nimmo (four for 55) did most of Carisbrook B's bowling. .The finish between Old Boys and AlbionY.M.C.A. was even closer. Old Boys’ score of 112 was not a strong one, but the board showed 110 when the last Albion-Y.M.C.A. wicket fell. V. J. Leader (37 not out) and J. A. Smith (21) were the best Old Boys scorers against the bowling of L. , Smith (four for 51) and J. Allen (three for 58). S. Duncan (28) and H. Miller (21) gave AlbiomY.M.C.A. a useful start, but Allen (41) was the only other batsman to shape at all well to the spin bowling of L. J. Groves. Groves’s analysis was seven for 52 in 14.1 overs, and Leader took the other three wickets for 38 runs. Along with Carisbrook B, Kaikorai maintained unbeaten record. Its win against Carisbrook A was an easy bne The hill side scored 190 for nine wickets (K. Burke 40. G. McGregor 32, E. Rennick 32, C. Allcott 31; J.
