PERSONAL

Vice-Regal , The Governor-General,' Sir Cyril Newall, received Major-general E. Puttick, Chief of the General Staff, on Saturday. Mr W. R. Clarke returned on Saturday from a visit to Wellington. Mr J. S. Hunt was a passenger for Wellington by the through express on Saturday. ■ \ ■ Mr .L. D.. Coombs arrived by the express from the north on Saturday afternoon.

Mr M. Silverstone returned to Dunedin on Saturday by the afternoon express from the north. Passengers for the north by air on Saturday were: Mr K. K. Watts, Mr H. S. Adams, Miss E. Roys, Sir Charles Norwood, Mrs B. Milne and Miss R. Milne for Wellington.

Messrs A. Campbell, M.L.C., J. W. Munro, M;P., W. A. Bodkin, M.P., J. A. Roy, M.P., W. M C Denham, M.P., were passengers by the express from the north on Saturday afternoon. Gunners L. R. Hercus and C. S. Hercus were entertained by members of the Hanover Street Baptist Church at the conclusion of the service last evening. Dr Charles North spoke on behalf of the church, and the guests suitably replied.

Miss Nella McCartney, Corporal Eric Highet, Bombardier Colin Gray and Second-lieutenant Fraser Grant, who were on leave from military camp, were met by the Rev. S. D. Baird and Messrs D. W. Kaye and J. B. Grant, of the Musselburgh Presbyterian Church, on Wednesday night and presented with gifts, Mr Kaye making the presentations on % behalf of the congregation.

Mr W. J. Bardsley and Mrs Bardsley, who are about to leave Dunedin, ended a lifelong association with the Hanover Street Baptist Church last night when they were entertained by the members of the congregation. Mrs E. H. Drew (for the church), Mr D. J. Calder (officers) and Mrs Hiett (women) expressed the regret of all at the departure of Mr and Mrs Bardsley, who were the recipients of a gift of crystal ware. Mr and Mrs Bardsley will leave tomorrow for the north.
