ATTRACTIVE REVUE

“THROUGH THE STUDIO DOOR”

Entertainment that was at once novel and attractive was provided by the tielightful revue, 11 Through the Studio Door.” which was presented On Saturday afternoon and evening in His Majesty s Theatre in conjunction with the George Formby film, “Come On George, by the Lily Stevens Dance Group. The conception of this fascinating divertissement was exceptionally clever, in that it set out to show the intricate and difficult processes that are involved in the training of a voung dancer, and, for illustration, there were first presented several ballets which, although of the simpler type, were, nevertheless, admirably executed and reflected the greatest credit on the youthful performers. Still more advanced were the excerpts from the popular films The Wizard of Oz, Gulliver s Travels, " Snowhite,” and “ Plnocchlo,” while the young dancers Introduced a sparkling touch of comedy with an episode from “ Ferdinand the Bull.” All of these scenes were depicted in full character, and the manner in Which the varied and sometimes difficult parts were enacted indicated patient and expert training, allied with long practice. An outstanding feature of the programme was a series of what were described as “ Russian Ballet Memories, which included such attractive dance numbers as “ Les Sylphides,” “ The Dance of the Little Swans,” from Tschalkowsky’s “ Swan Lake,” and a variation from ”Le Marriage d’Aurore.” Magnificently staged, the dances were little below professional standard in. their execution, and Miss Stevens, no less than her pupils, Is to be congratulated on having successfully presented what was undoubtedly one of the most attractive entertainments of its kind ever seen in Dunedin. A spectacular finale, “ Friend America,” brought the show to a close.
