Acceptances.—The acceptances for the Wingatui and Wsikouaiti meetings are due on Friday next. The Camp.—lt is understood that the Wingatui course will be cleared of military occupation to-day. Clerk of Scales.—Mr C. R. Caffln has been appointed clerk of the scales for the Dunedin Jockey Club's meetings. Mr Caffln has had previous experience, having acted in that capacity at Wingatui some years ago. The Wairlo Meeting.—Owing to being remote from a railway service, the Wairio meeting has been postponed to a date later In the season. Lord Puck.—lt is reported that Lord Puck broke a leg a couple of days ago, and had to be destroyed. F.xtra Trains.—Petrol restrictions mean extra business for the railways, and on Boxing Day three trains will leave Wellington for the Manawatu and Wairarapa races. Race Trains.—Five special trains, in addition to suburban trains, will run from Dunedin ,to Wingatui in connection with the Dunedin Jockey Club’s summer meeting. The Wellington Cup.—When the Wellington Cup is run over two miles this ’season it will not break new ground in the history of the race. The distance was not reduced to a mile and a-half until Cynisca scored the first of three consecutive wins in 1890.
The Oamaru Meeting.—The fact that the Oamaru Jockey Club has decided to withhold the publication of the handicaps for its meeting until after the Wingatui meeting is very much appreciated by owners and trainers with horses engaged. Good Going.—At present the course proper at Wingatui supplies excellent going, and a few showers or a fall o£ rain would make the track all that could be desired for the, meeting. The topdressing of silt applied during the past two or three years has brought about this desirable state of affairs.
Strip.—The Valkyrian gelding Strip now looks in more robust condition than formerly, and on appearance should be able to repeat, his best form. So far he does not appear to have displayed a recurrence of bleeding. Lard Nuffield.—The Straightcourse gelding Lord Nuffield is a heavily topped horse and so places an extra tax on his legs. He appears, however, to be standing up well to his work. A Test.—A weight-for-age or special weight race is seldom a true test of stamina. When Kindergarten won the Great Northern St. Leger last season it was generally regarded as an exercise gallop for him, but in some quarters it has been accepted as a real test of stamina for Lou Rosa, who ran second. Lou Rosa has 8.3 in the Auckland Cup and if he could extend Kindergarten over a mile and three-quarters at even weights he would be entitled to a good chance at the weights. Importations.—The difficulty in obtaining transport has caused a serious shrinkage in the importation of bloodstock from England to Australia. Volume XIX of the Australian Studbook records the importation of 134 horses between 1907 and 1940. The stallion figures dwindle from 17 in 1937 to seven in 1940. This year only five horses have arrived in Australia from overseas. Jockey’s Death.—lncluded in a recent list of casualties in Libya is the name of E. Mackie. formerly of Southland and South Canterbury, who died of wounds. Mackie was a well-known hurdle horseman for some years in the South Island, and was attached to the stable of his brother-im-law, E. J. Ellis, at Washdyke, for a long time, riding several winners for him, including Adult and Rasouli. Mackie gave up riding a few seasons back, and was employed in the Railways Department at the time of his enlistment early in the war period. Versatile.— Racing at mixed gaits, trotting and pacing, Dark Hazard has won over £3OOO in stakes. ' Forfeit List. —The forfeit list should be extended to include obligations incurred in connection with breeding. Six Months.—The New South Wales Trotting Club recently disqualified a driver for six months for striking another driver with his whip during a race. White Globe.—The Australian mare White Globe has been registered as under a lease to Mr J. R. McKenzie.
Pacing Power.—The prowess of Pacing Power Is held responsible for the small acceptance in the New Zealand Championship Stakes. Star Attraction.—A two-mile championship for trotters with free-for-all conditions will form a star attraction at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s February meeting.
No Arms—The fact that he lost both arms in a fall from a mower at the age of nine has not deterred Colby Turner from following the vocation of a trainer and driver of trotters and pacers, and successfully, too (says the Harness Horse) It might seem like a physical impossibility for a man without arms to drive a horse in races and attain any measure of success; that is just what Turner has done. He has raced principally in the Middle West, and has developed a number of fast horses that have raced well for him and many of them later for other people. In spite of the handicap of lack of hands and arms, Turner manages to rally his horses and can also use a whip deftly when needed in close finishes.
