INQUIRIES ABOUT SOUTH ISLAND WORK OF TRAVEL ASSOCIATION The South Island Travel Association, the only publicity agency of its kind to be maintained by private subscription, is in constant touch with people in other countries by means of the periodic distribution of publications, most of which are descriptive of the scenic attractions. The result of Mt> endeavour to bring the South Island into prominence, said the acting director (Mr H. L. Gibson) yesterday, had been a large volume of correspondencp was being received from month to month from nefsons In other countries who were seeking Information about living conditions in this part of the Dominion Many of these nad the intention of taking up residence in the South Island A typical letter. Mr Gibson said, was one from a member of the Dar-Es-Salaam Criminal Investigation Office in Tanganyika. This correspondent .apparently an Englishman, with a wife and child, requested information with respect to the amount of any monetary deposit required of immigrants the cost of a small bungalow, the average temoeratures in various parts of the country, the educational facilities, and general living expenses. He signified his intention of settling in New Zealand upon his retirement at the end of the war, and accompanied his request with two monev orders to cover. the cost of a reply. Another correspondent was a tradesman In England with several thousand pounds at his disposal, who was making inquiries as to the conditions for establishing himself in his own line of business, as he was coming to New Zealand to settle. Mr Gibson said that residents in East China and India desiring a change had also been persuaded bv the association to visit the South Island
