TEMPORARY POST

MINISTER TO WASHINGTON APPOINTMENT OF MR NASH EXPECTED (Special) CHRISTCHURCH, Dec. 4. The appointment of the Minister of Finance, Mr W. Nash.- to the temporary post of New Zealand Minister to Washington, is expected to be announced soon. The last announcement made on the possibilities of an appointment was on November 14, when the Prime Minister, Mr Fraser, said he expected to be in a position to announce the name of the Minister selected before Christmas. The general belief in Labour circles is that Mr Nash will be the first Min-

ister to Washington, and that it will be made clear that his appointment is of a temporary nature to ensure the sound establishment of the Legation and to purchase the additional property needed for the Dominion at Washington. If Mr Nash is appointed he is not expected .to be away from the' Dominion for more than one year, dur- ; ing which time another Budget will be presented to the House of Representatives. Labour Party members believe that Mr Fraser himself will take the portfolio of Finance during Mr Nash's absence.

Although no date has been announced, it is reported that Mr F. Langstone, who has been in the United States for the greater part of this year, will shortly return to the Dominion. S
