FINE TOMATOES
FIT FOR A BANQUET ' A wryly amusing story on the food question comes from a London correspondent, who said that at the time of writing a of hers was planning a social occasion on ambitious lines. , This friend, she says, lives in a block of so-called luxury flats where the hot water is often cold and the lift has a deplorable tendency to get out of order. But her flat boasts a pleasant outside balcony, and on this she has been trying her hand at growing tomatoes. There are only three plants and they have produced thus far a total crop of five tomatoes. She tells her friends, hopefully, that other buds are coming on! But the five tomatoes that have arrived are ripening fast. When they are ready for the table she threatens to give a dinner party at which everyone will be in evening dress and the men will be asked to wear their decorations.
