A GOOD FAMILY RECORD

TO THE EDITOR Sir,—ln Saturday’s Daily Times there is an account of a good family record, contributed by Mr Stuart, secretary of the Livingstone Patriotic Committee. It is the record of the Blancnard family, Mr Blanchard having six sons in khaki—four overseas and the two youngest in camp training for overseas service. All of them, we are assured, are key men, and neither the father nor any of the six sons appealed. Truly a wonderful example shown by them, and, as a certain gentleman in Wellington takes his hat off to -the waterside workers, the slaughtermen, and coal miners, I certainly take mine off to Mr Blanchard and his six brave sons. May God bless and protect them and bring them all safe back home again! I wonder what the conscientious objectors and cold-feet chaps who have been granted exemption think of the boys I have mentioned? Surely it must prick their conscience—if they have any. I notice that 400 odd appeals are yet to be heard in the Otago area. One wonders when the end will be. I feel sure that if the Appeal Board were informed of the true facts in respect of some of the appeals there would not be so many exemptions. 1 notice that some of the church dignitaries think their young ministers should be exempt from military service. In this I disagree with thbm. Why should exemption be granted when so many of our brave young men have gone, and are still going, to uphold the cause of justice and righteousness?—l am, etc., Sidney M. Taylor. Alma, North Otago.
