OLD PREDICTION FALSE A prediction concerning the disappearance of the Maori race within 50 years was made by the New Zealand correspondent of the Bristol Times in 1865. A copy of this paper shows that the correspondent was of the opinion that the race was- destined to die out. He based this opinion on a few population returns which gave the ratio of the sexes. This, he said, could be taken as 100 men, 75 women and 50 children under 15 years of age. or 50 of the rising generation to replace 175 adults. This could end only in one way. and as had often been predicted they would look in vain for a Maori 50 years later. As far as can be determined from the statistics now available, the Maori population in 1864 was about 50,000. This number steadily deci'eased until 1001. when the Maoris numbered 45,500.
