BALCLUTHA Personal. —The Rev. J. N. Whittington has accepted the call from the Balclutha Presbyterian Church, and is expected to give his inaugural sermon on Sunday, December 7, Mr Whittington, who recently graduated from the Presbyterian Theological College in Dunedin, has had a varied experience, including some years spent at sea. and possesses a wide outlook on life. He is an eloquent speaker, —Mr A. K. Baxter, clerk of the Clutha County Council, has been notified that he has passed the necessary examinations for the Air Force and has qualified as an observer.
Post Office for Clydevale.—A start has been piade to excavate a site for the new post office at Clydevale. the contractois for which are the Butler Construction Company. The building is to have dimensions of 20 feet by 40 feet, and the contract price is £1513. It stands next to the Public Hall and on the same side of the road.
mijlton Bruce Building Society.—The annual meeting of the Bruce Property, Investment and Building Society was held in the Coronation Hall on Monday night, the president (Mr G. H. Thorrison) presiding over an attendance of 53 members. The annual report showed that the number of shareholders was at present 249, holding 2509 shares, of which 1593 were investing shares, the balance being advanced upon. The gross profit for the year was £1404 15s sd, and the commit-, tee recommended that a dividend of 4 per cent, be declared. The sum of £SO was contributed to the London Air Raid Distress Fund. The reserve fund now stands at £340. Moving the adoption of the balance sheet, the president gave some comparative figures to show that the business of the .society had varied little from year to year. Subscriptions this year amounted to £4318 (last year £4315), interest £1337 (£1364), total receipts £9739 (£9832). Working expenses (£294) were practically the same as previously. The election of officers resulted as follows f— President, Mr G. H. Thomson: vice-president, Mr James Gray; committee, Messrs W. H. Hitchon and G. Melville; shareholders’ auditor, Mr H. E. Ransome. The auditor’s fees were fixed at £3 3s. 1
