FIRE IN MINE

GLEN AFTON COLLIERY PRODUCTION INTERRUPTED (Special) AUCKLAND, Nov. 13. . Production in the Glen Afton colliery. Raglan county, was brought to a temporary standstill yesterday by an extensive outbreak of fire "Which was discovered in the mine early in the morning. The discovery was made by a shiftman in a section a considers able distance in from the mine outlet. The superintendent, Mr W. Parsonage, was called, and he organised a band of officials and workmen who were soon engaged in sealing off the. affected section. Because of the extent of the outbreak, the heat and th-r smoke, the work was carried out with considerable difficulty. After several hours of strenuous labour the fire was got under control and the sealing process was completed as far as possible. No mining was done in the colliery _ yesterday, and no announcement was made as to how long the mine would be idle. There are 152 men employed in the mine, which covers a. surface area of 3653 acres. The area of the workings is approximately 438 acres.
