DUNEDIN AIRMAN
MENTIONED IN DESPATCHES FLYING OFFICER L. J. JOEL (PA.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Air Headquarters announced that among New Zealanders mentioned in despatches a few days ago appeared the name of Flying Officer L. J. Jowl. This should have read Flying Officer L. J. Joel, the error having occurred in transmission.
Flying Officer L. J. Joel was educated at the St. Clair School and the Otago Boys’ High School. He left Dunedin in February, 1938. to work his passage Home, and he joined the R.A.F. as a temporary pilot in August of the same year. In November he was granted a commission as a pilot officer. Volunteering for service in Africa, he left England in the same month, and was stationed in both Cairo and Mombasa before the war. He was sent later to the Sudan, where he remained during the Abyssinian campaign. Since that time he has been serving in the Middle East. He was promoted to flight lieutenant a few months ago. It is thought by his father, Mr J. L. Joel, of Coughtrey street, St. Clair, that his promotion was due to his being mentioned in despatches.
