SHORTAGE OF GUM BOOTS IMPORT SCHEDULE REVISED (P.A.). WELLINGTON, Oct. 14. Licences for imports of gum boots from the United Kingdom and other British sources will be granted to 100 per cent, of the value for 1941 for the sixth period, January to December. 1942. Stocks of these essential articles for farm, sea and other wear are reported to be exceedingly low, and there are no reserves. The Federation of Drapers, Clothiers and Boot Retailers prepared a statement for the Department of Industries and Commerce, and this disclosed that the average importation of gum boots during the three years 1937, 1938 and 1939 amounted to 361,192 pairs per annum. For the seven months ended July 31 last, the importations from Empire countries were 175,728 pairs. This can be taken as the approximate total of importations for 1941, as in most cases the bulk of the imports arrive• before the end of June in each year. It is to be noted, however, that the prices of rubber and cotton have risen fully 10 per cent, f.o.b. over the 1941 prices. Incidentally, the position regarding stocks of goloshes in New Zealand was represented to the department as serious. ' LORNEVILLE MARKET LITTLE CHANGE IN RULING RATES (P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Oct. 13. The fat sheep yarding at the Lorneville stock sale to-day was smaller than that of last week and consisted mainly of ewes. In the early stages, the market for ewes was similar to that in the closing stages of last week's sale, but after about one-third of the yarding had been disposed of there was a definite firming tendency, and for the remainder of the auction values were fully 3s above those ruling in the early stages. Values for fat wethers remained unchanged. Prime quality woolly wethers made from 34s 6d to 35s 6d, medium quality 32s to 335, prime shorn wethers 25s to 265, medium 23s to 24s 6d, and light 21s to 225. Prime young woolly ewes realised from 25s to 275, good quality 25s to 265. medium 22s 9d to 23s 6d. inferior 18s to 20s. good quality shorn ewes 16s to 18s, and unfinished 14s to 15s.

Extra prime fat lambs sold to 36s 6d, medium-weights 24s 6d to 34s 6d, and light 21s to 225. The fat cattle yarding was of good quality and the beef entry consisted mainly of bullocks. For the major part of the sale values were fully as good as those ruling the previous week, and in only one or two instances, more particularly for cows, were values lower to anv extent. Extra prime heavy-weight bullocks made to £24, prime heavy-weight £2O 15s to £2l 17s 6d, prime quality £l7 to £lB 10s, god quality medium-weights £l6 to £l6 10s, and light £l4 10s to £ls 10s. Prime quality cows made from £l3 to £l4 ss, good quality £ll 10s to £l2 10s, medium-weight £9 to £lO, and aged £6 10s to £7 10s. Prime quality mediqm-weight heifers commanded from £l3 5s to £l4, handyweights £ll 10s to £l2 10s. small £9 10s to £lO 10s. and unfinished £8 to £8 15s.
