TRAFFIC CONTROL
TO THE EDITOR
Sir,—Having observed the Traffic Department's educative programme in a current issue of the Daily Times, may I recommend a little publicity regarding the more important matters of city traffic? Concerning Pedestrians (a) Cross road at proper place, and always at right angles—not cornerwise, which is very dangerous. (b) When using pedestrian crossings, don't loiter; move smartly. Stop at the centre line, and cive way to traffic on far side of road.
(c) Obey traffic lights, or staff in control of. crossings, and move with traffic. Concerning Cars
(a) Park properly, leaving three feet each end clear of next car.
(b) Cease double-banking. Signal on leaving kerb. Don't pull up in road centre to talk to friends. (c) Drive.on left hand of the road, not in the centre. If intending to turn right, first signal and move across into proper lane in centre of road. Then through traffic is not interfered with. At present, many cars move from centre lane across to left lane, to turn right—which is very bad. Turn properly on the square of the corner. (d) Do not attempt to pass within 30 feet of corner, or stop to obstruct a corner, as is so often done.
(e) Mount four traffic inspectors, on fast motor cycles, with roving commissions. Two from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.. other two from 4 p.m.-l a.m. Then get down on loitering drivers during day hours. Traffic should keep moving freely. (f) In this city traffic is expected to turn at intersections, but few obey the rule of giving way. in so doing, to all traffic of every kind. (g) Car drivers give way to all traffic on right, including cycles. Cyclists riding three abreast arc a common sight, but roving inspectors, expert with traffic, could make a big improvement.
I apologise for the length of this letter, but the subject is untouched I am. etc., Advance.
