WORK ON THE WATERFRONT
TO THE EDITOR Sir, —Can you tell me why great, strong men on the waterfront deliberately ruin their reputation for all time by loafing when honest work, without sweating, would save our country from the terrors of Hitlerism and most probably save the lives of these men themselves? In Sydney the workers have some sense of honour. They have increased output about 50 per cent. We are proud of these men. But what I cannot understand is the deliberate evasion seen here of an honest day's work for double pay. What do they want? Why are they not brave enough to enlighten the public? Have all these able-bodied men no sense ot self-defence? Are they so childishly foolish as to think that by holding up war work and endangering even their own families, they are being either clever or brave? And what about a Government that will tolerate such defiance from these men and their secretaries.—l am, etc., Dunedin, October 11, Dump Them.
