THE STOCKING SHORTAGE

TO THE EDITOB Sir, —The women of New Zealand, being intensely patriotic, have been very patient with our Government over the stocking shortage, but now that we know the true reason for the shortage we must all see what can be done to remedy the position. When Mr Nash emphasises "silk stockings" he is diverging from the mam point. It is not silk stockings only that are in short supply, but every type of stocking and sock which women can wear ts practically unprocurable, or if procurable at all, only at prices that are outrageously high. For instance. 5s 6d was asked last week for a cotton mixture stockings which pre-war could be bought in Dunedin- for about a shilling, and 2s 9d was asked for a poorly shaped white cotton sock as worn by a secondary school girl for summer. Having two secondary school fgirl daughters and a much-taxed small income, I know the hours I spend per week making school stockings and week-end sox and stockings presentable to " do another turn." Meantime, most mothers are going about their household duties stockingless and cold in order to save their one remaining pair of stockings for " going out." Although silk stockings are. not being bought now by the women of England. I understand they can get a beautifully made fine mesh stocking which

looks as nice as silk' and wears better; 1 . This type of stocking and an ade?, quate supply of wool or wool and silk stockings for winter is all we ask or our Government.—l am, etc.. Mother. %
