THE FIELDS FOR TO-DAY A good card has been obtained for the second day of the Dunedin spring meeting and should supply interesting "sport. The star attraction will be the Dunedin Guineas, for which a field of nine will go to the post. Neither Kernel nor Arabian Night has form to recommend them. Arabian Night had his chance extinguished at the start of the Maungatua Handicap. Palfrey did not race up to expectations in the Air Force Handicap, in which he was slow away and afterwards failed to get a clear run at the home turn. Sir Gundi won by staying on, but in a comparatively slow race in the Taioma Handicap, in which Salutation finished close up. On that form Salutation should again finish in front of Silver Lily, and Desert Maid. Willow Wood showed improved form, and Bird of Prey may be better suited*over a shorter journey. Both Palfrey and Salutation will be improved by their races on the first day. and they may be most in demand, and Sir Gundi must come into consideration on his win on Saturday and his second to Palfrey in the .Tohn Grlgg Stakes. Iceland Spar meets Don't Forget on 41b worse terms in the Army Handicap than when a neck separated them on the first day. Strip and Stabilise will meet Islay Downs on much better terms than oh the first day. but they would have to show considerable improvement on first day's form. At Geraldine Stabilise comfortably defeated Don't Forget at a difference of 131 b. and reads well treated on that form. Strip meets Stabilise on 71b better terms than when he beat the latter over six furlongs at Geraldine. Night Pal meets Islay Downs on 51b better terms than in the October Handicap, and the result may. be the same. Anglo-Irish will probably help to set the pace and should run a fairly smart mile with 211 b less than he carried on the first dav~ Mungatoon suffers from doubt at the barrier.

In the Navy Handicap Dark Flight meets Withdrawal on 41b worse terms over an extra furlong than on the first day. Rebel Mate meets Dark Flight on 81b. and Sham Boy comes In on 91b better terms. Rebel Mate meets Strip on 91b better terms than, when he beat him over six furlongs on the first day of the Dunedin winter meeting. The following may be amongst those fancied for their engagements:— 12.30: WAKARI HURDLES.- !«lerrv Simon. Auctor. Colonel Rouge. 1.6: NOVICE HANDICAP.—Paper Whistle. Some good novices took part in the Innovation Handicap, in which Bomber. Pegasus Bay. Westcliff and Suspense comprised the leading division a long way trom home, with Windsor Lad handy This was the order entering the straight but a little further on Westcliff challenged Bomber. They drew away together, but Bomber broke under pressure leaving Westcliff to win decisively, making his third success in the past year Pegasus Bay hung on to beat Windsor Lad fcr third, while Mavis Nelson, after a slow start, came home fast at the head of the others.

Battle Colours led all the way and had an easy win in the Shirley Handicap, making his third success in eight months He was closely followed for a mile by Shady Glen, Passing By, Gentleman Jim, Rerekohua, Talak and Countless, while at the home turn Southland had joined' in. Battle Colours drew away impressively in the straight, while Passing By stalled off the win favourite. Countless. Gentleman Jim and Southland headed the others.

All Gallant set the pace for nearly nine furlongs in the Members* Handicap, but Loyal Friend. Joan Conquest, Indian Clipper, Jack Spratt and Siege Gun then ran past him. Once in the straight Joan Conquest challenged Loyal Friend, and they drew right away, the latter winning decisively, with Indian Clipper 10 lengths back. Jack Spratt, Siege Gun and Marfax were next. Loyal Friend, with four wins, a second and a fourth since April, is on the way to good class. The A. I. Rattray Memorial Handicap was a duel between Springfield Globe and Gold Bar, who began fast and drew away from their opponents after a furlong. Gold Bar was showing the way 1.0 his rivnl al the end of half a mile, and the position was unchanged at the mile post. Worthy Need. Bronze Eagle, Accountant, Toorak, Lightning Lady and Kenworthy being next after a gap. This was reduced half a mile from home, but the two leaders went away again in the straight. Springfield Globe proved too solid for Gold Bar, winning by three lengths. Bronze Eagle did best of the others. Lightning Lady and Kenworthy being next. In most of his successes Gold Bar has gained a big lead early, but on this occasion Springfield Globe began as fast and was much too good for Gold Bar at the finish. The winner, bred in Australia, is raced on lease by R. B. Berry, and he looks now like going on to more success.

Mazaire set the pace for half a mile in the Travis Handicap, after which Rollalong joined him. with B'ack Surprise. Ptirina, Aldershot and Blue Diamond handy. Rollalone retired half a mile from home. Black Surprise challenged Mazaire when the straight was reached, and won by half a length. Oxford Scholar came from a long wav back to beat Purina for third.

Milestone and Sagamore were prominent early in the Avon Handicap, and half a mile from home Within ran into third place. Sagamore led to the straight, where Within challenged and he won an exciting race by a head. Margin finished strongly in third place, closely followed by Hatrack, Milestone and Allie Audubon. Indian Clipper was the early leader, at a slow pace, in the Beach Handicap, Catalpa, Sister Polly, Sunny Corner, Durability, Direct Bell and Scapa Flow heading the others. Sunny Corner and Catalpa joined Indian Clipper three furlongs from home. Once in the straight, Indian Clipper was again in charge, but Scapa Flow came along with a challenge to wear him down. Catalpa was unlucky, as ho lost several lengths when he broke at the end of a mile, so his third was a good effort. In the Victory Handicap Waitaki Power made the running for seven furlongs, after which Haughty dashed to the front, with Gold Bank, Waitaki Power, Kings Jubilee, Clockwork and Ronald Logan following. Acuity was a long way back at this stage, but she staged a brilliant run over the last half-mile, beating Haughty by half a length, while King's Jubilee was a neck away. Ronald Logan, win favourite, did well to finish fourth, after breaking at the start. AUCKLAND MEETING MITCHELSON CUP TO KILCASH REGAL FOX WINS GUINEAS (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 11. RACING IN AUSTRALIA THE V.A.T.C MEETING GUINEAS TO TEA CAKE (Rec. 9 p.m.) MELBOURNE. Oct. 12. In fine weather an excellent attendance saw the racing at Flemington racecourse on the first day of the Victoria Amateur Turf Club's spring meeting. The going held well. Frill King, a half-brother to the Williamstown and Moonee Valley Cup winner Yarramba, gave a smart performance to win the lola Trial Handicap. Wide out throughout, he outstayed his rivals. Veiled Promise ran a game race, and Triton finished strongly. The Adelaide-owned Ducal led always in the Debutante Stakes, for. two-year-old colts and geldings. Ducal now has two wins and a second in three starts. Great Britain made a tardy beginning, but finished well, and possibly was unlucky. Balcrest was a surprise third and Haros a promising fourth. In spite of a slow start, Abound finished gamelv to win in the Debutante Stakes (fillies'). She cost 180gns as a yearling. Lady Valiant finished well. Miss Understood led, but weakened,'and just secured third place. • There was a thrilling finish in the Caulfield Guineas. Tea Cake withstood strong challenges from The Trapper and Gay Revelry and. won narrowly. It was generally expected that Skipton, Laureate, and High Road would fight out the finish. High Road made a poor effort. Laureate who had every show, finished fifth. Skipton, badly placed early, finished well and gave the best Derby trial. All Love had a big lead at the entrance to the straight, but tired badly. Tea Cake, who was a cheap vearling. has now registered five wins three seconds, and five thirds in 15 starts. He is not entered for the cups, and, being a gelding, is ineligible for the Derby Rain'bar attempted to lead always in the Power Handicap, but Historian finished too well. Sir Richard was a good third. Palencia improved on recent efforts, and finished fourth. Velocity was a trifle disappointing to his Cup admirers, but will appreciate a lighter weight next week. Historian ran in near the post, but a protest was dismissed. Sun Valley directed attention to his Caulfield Cup chance by a brilliant finishing effort to win the Tdorak Handicap. Interference early appeared to settle his chance, but he put up a game performance. Warbird surprised. Panka had every chance. Carlton made a poor effort. Amiable and All Veil were never possibilities. Crojlck made a promising effort. Following are the results:— lOLO TRIAL HANDICAP,

THE AJ.C. MEETING DASHING CAVALIER WINS (Rec 9 p.m.) SYDNEY, Oct. 12. The final day's racing at Randjrt* which was again favoured with the finest weather, was devoid of any sensations most interest having been transferred to Flemington. Nevertheless this A.J.C. meeting was one of the most successful on Dashing Cavalier reproduced his earlier form in winning the Randwick Plate, which as expected, was in the nature of a gift to him, and all that remains is whether he will take part in the Melbourne Cup, in which case he would be regarded as dangerous. Popular belief is that he will be reserved for weight-for-age races in Sydney. Following are the results:— " CANON BURY STAKES. Of £650. Five furlongs. Taurangi.—lt is reported that B. H. Morris hfes been retained to ride Taurangi in the New Zealand Cup. Paper Money.—The well-known sire Paper Money has got seven winners of the McLean Stakes. Two Engagements.—Kohara, AngloIrish, Arabian Night, Desert Maid, Stabilise, Strip and Night Pal are engaged in two races on to-day's card. English Blood Stock.—According to reports several commissions have been placed on account of New Zealand breeders for stock coming under the hammer at the Newmarket October sales. In Good Order.—By the way he won at Wingatui, Iceland Spar proved himself in good order and progressing well in his preparation for the New Zealand Cup. , Strip.—On paper Strip looked a good bet for the October Handicap. He had a 71b allowance and was meeting Stabilise on 161 b better terms than when he beat him Into third place at Geraldine. In spite of this apparent pull In the weights Stabilise started a better favourite than Strip and Islay Downs carried more support for a place. A Triangular Duel.—Although the Churchill Handicap became a triangular duel, it nevertheless aroused considerable interest. There was a margin of only £46 between the favourite and the outsider. Doublcack.—The Balboa gelding Doubleack looked a bit lean in the flank when sent out for the Churchill Handicap, and ,

apparently has not been doing too well. He faded out in the run home instead or staying on as he has when showing hia best form.

Setting the Pace.—Don't Forget set his own pace in the Churchill Handicap, and might have won on speed if he had set a slower pace, and won in a dash for home. , Iceland Spar, however, measured him off nicely, but had to be stirred up to do so. Fractious Horses.—Safe Light and Bascule gave considerable trouble at the start for the Maungatua Handicap. They were on the rails, and interfered with Arabian Night when the barrier rose. Both of them should have been ordered out of the way. The offenders are in again,to-day, and should be treated with less consideration. They may be in a field of 15 in the Clarendon Handicap, and the majority should command the moat consideration. - Another pair that gave trouble were Boucaut and Happy feet, and they should also be treated without consideration unless they show improvement.

Newcomers.—Some " fresh blood " may appear to-day at Wingatui. These Include Lord Nuffield, Green Boa, Brightform. Alpine, Royal Writ, Ditty Box, Prince Leighon, Flagman, True Mate, Gergia, Egyptian Rose, and Coy. Egyptian Rose won a double at the C.J.C. autumn meeting. Brightf orm was third to Parchment and Johnemby at Geraldine and third to Ackemma and Parchment on the second day of the meeting. Alpine shaped fairly well in a sprint on Thursday last with Winning Flight. She appeared to be waiting with him. True Mate has a reputation,' but no public form.

Salutation.—Willow Wood was giving; Salutation 61b (including allowance) In the Taioma Handicap, and they will meet again in the Dunedin Guineas with lib in. the former's favour. The race on the first day will probably improve Salutation, who would have beaten Willow Wood in the Taioma Handicap if she had not lost ground by drifting at the home turn. The grey filly should beat Willow .Wood in the Dunedin Guineas if Hhis surmise Is correct, and she will probably have a stronger rider in the saddle. Willow Wood, however, must be given credit lor staying out a good seven furlongs. Positions.—The draw for position In the McLean Stakes showed that a berth near the rails helps a horse's chance. The positions were Foxhaven 11, Red Prize 4, Cataract 1, Chestnut Glow 10, Trapeze 8, Carolyn 9, Gold Branch 3, Legal Lady 5, Grilse 8, Winning Flight 2, and Macedoine 7. If those on or near the rails can hold their positions to the turn it makes It more difficult for those on the outside to get amongst the money. Foxhaven and Chestnut. Glow, who put up a brilliant gallop on Friday, failed to get near a place. A Smart Filly.—Winning Flight created a good impression by the manner la which she reeled off three furlongs on Thursday morning. She began well in the McLean Stakes, and had the race well won at the home turn. There iR not much of Winning Flight, but she fills the eye as a racy-looking sort. She was got by Winning Hit from Francolin, by Paper Money—Philomela, by Bezonian— Arethusa, by Dreadnought—Dryad, by St. Leger—Wood Nymph, by Musket—Sylvia, by Fisherman—Juliet. Francolin has been a good producer of speed, as her other contributions to the Stud Book are Nightwings, Ortyx, Dark Flight, and Gold Flight. The family to which Francolin belongs' is ' more of a staying tribe than one of speed. The best known members of the tribe are Martini Henry (Melbourne Cup and Derby), Charon (A.J.C. Derby and V.R.C. Derby), Benvolio (A.J.C. Derby), Robinson Crusoe (A.J.C. Champagne, Derbv, and St. Leger), First Water (Australian Cup, Adelaide Cup, St. Leger), Sylvanite (A.J.C. Derby and VJt.C. Derby), Nordenfeldt (A.J.C. Derby and V.R.C. Derby), Goldsborough, Robin Hood, Gold Crest and others of note on the turf and at the stud. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October 25, 27.—Greymouth T.C. October 25, 27.—Auckland T.C. October 27.—Oamaru T.C. Oamaru Trotting Meeting.—Nominations are due to-day for' the Oamaru Trotting Club's meeting. Trouble—At last week's meeting of the Trotting Association the Auckland Trotting Club reported an inquiry into the behaviour of M. Stewart after the running of the August Handicap at its recent meeting. An inouiry had been held into the running of the race but before this the attention of the stipendiary steward had been drawn to the behaviour of Stewart, who. in the hearing of others, had used bad language to E. N. Kennerley. The crowd lining the rails had noticed the incident and had called to Stewart, " Can't you take it?" Stewart had been fined £lO. The inquiry into the running of the race "alleged interference by Kennerley, but the evidence did not show that any had taken place. A letter from Stewart to the board alleged interference by Kennerley throughout the race. Stewart said he had lost his tamper and after the race had told Kennerley what he thought of him. As a rpsult of the interference Stewart's mare. Betty Boop, had been injured. He was. sorry he had lost his temper and apologised for the occurrence. Maiden Races.—At last week's meeting of the board of the New Zealand Trotting Association, Mr J. R. McKenzie drew attention to what he considered a weakness in the sport in the poor provision made far maiden horses. During last season, said Mr McKenzie, 422 maiden horses were raced and there were onlv 95 races in New Zealand for them. In addition, 350 new horses had been registered. At the present rate he calculated it would be four years and a-half before all these horses graduated to the second grade. The South Island trotting clubs were paying little attention to maiden horses, and It was left to the racing clubs to provide the few opportunities. With the exception of the Ashburton Trotting Club there was not one within 50 miles of Christchurch offering any encouragement to the maiden trotter or pacer. At Methven last Saturday two races had to be run in divisions, and with the stakes reduced the winner received a' penalty that placed it on a mark which no races provided for A way out of the difficultv might be In making it compulsory for clubs to put on maiden races and in the event*©* the fields being too big that the places be balloted for. with the fees returned to the owners of the horses not accepted. He moved that the association consider a remit to be presented to Conference compelling all clubs to put .on a race, 3min 39sec class or slower, for a mile and a-half.
