ONE OF THE ’“ FOUR COLONELS "
Among the recent arrivals from the Middle East was Lieutenant-colonel N. L. Macky. of Auckland, who has been invalided home from overseas.
Lieutenant-colonel Macky, who is s barrister and solicitor, was associated with the territorial force after the Great War. and wrs appointed to the command of the Auckland Regiment in 1931. In 1935 he was made A.D.C. to the Governor-General, and in 1937 he was appointed colonel commanding the Ist Infantrv Brigade, relinquishing the post the same year. He was one of “ the four colonels ’’ who, in Mav. 1938. issued a joint statement calling attention to the condition of the defence force, and what they described as the inadequate nature of the policy announced by the Minister of Defence. The retirement of the four colonels was announced in the following July. On the formation of the second echelon. Lieutenant-colonel Macky was unpointed commanding officer of the Auckland Battalion which went to England and subsequently was transferred to the Middle East. The battalion played a prominent part in the defence of Greece.
