OBITUARY

MR G. C. GODFREY > (P.A.) WELLINGTON, Oct. 10. The death has occurred of Mr’G. C.' Godfrey, aged 61. He was formerly secretary of the Marine Department. Commissioner of Unemployment and Commissioner of Transport. Mr George Crosbie Godfrey was born in Christchurch in 1880. He received his primary education at the Waimataitai School, Timaru, and in his youth he was prominent in football, rowing and golf. He entered the public service in 1897, and he became private secretary to the Minister of Public Works in 1901, and chief clerk of that department in 1914. In 1927 he was appointed a member of the Local Government Loans Board. Mr Godfrey was one of the original members of the Main Highways Board, on which he served until 1924. From 1923 to . 1932 he was secretary of .the Department of Marine, and m the period 1932-36 he was secretary, of the Department of Labour and Immigration, and the Commissioner of Unemployment and Commissioner of Transport. He retired in 1936. Mr Godfrey saw service in the Great War with the 2nd Brigade. New Zealand Field Artillery. MR T. J. W. BUXTON (P.A.) AUCKLAND, Oct. 10. The death has occurred of Mr Thomas John Westland Buxton, aged 72. who was prominent in trotting circles for many years. He was patron of the Auckland Trotting Club at the lime of his death. Mr Buxton was a member of the Auckland Trotting Club for 41 years, and from 1934 to 1937 was president. He was one of the pioneers of trotting in the Waikato. He was a member of the New Zealand Trotting Association and a member of the Auckland Racing Club. He is survived by his wife and two sons and a daughter.
