STANDARD OF NUTRITION
POSITION IN BRITAIN HIGHER THAN BEFORE WAR RUGBY, Oct. 8. It is surely of the highest significance that in the midst of a life aind death struggle a meeting should be held to discuss the standard of life of the workers, said the Lord Privy Seal. Mr . C. R. Attlee, at Cambridge; when referring to his departure in a few days for New York to represent Ihe British Government at the conference of the International Labour Organisation. Mr Attlee drew attention to the fourth and fifth clauses of the Atlantic charter —equality of access to trade and raw' materials and the endeavour to secure improved labour standards, economic advancement and social security—which marked emphatically the change in outlook since the days of 1918. “They are no idle phrases designed to catch the attention of the multitude. They are meant to be implemented. Even in the midst of war we should be thinking of problems of peace. We should endeavour to carry out in our own domestic sphere theAy principles we proclaim as fundamental ~ to world peace. We are already seeking to do this,” said Mr Attlee, who concluded by saying that although Britain never fed all the people adequately. even in time of peace, he was assured that in spite of all the'war difficulties, broadly speaking, the standard of nutrition was higher now than before the war, and “ fewer people do not actually get sufficient”
