SEWER TO LAWYER'S HEAD CITY COUNCIL REPORTS The granting of authority to commence the work of constructing a new outfall sewer to Lawyer’s Head is announced in the report of the Works Committee which is to be presented to a meeting of the Dunedin Drainage Board on Monday night. The report states that the estimated total cost is £28,000, of which amount £IO,OOO has been provided in the current year’s loan allocation. The commencement of the work will be made through the property of the Dunedin Ocean Beach Domain Board adjoining the eastern end of Tahuna Park. Authority has also been granted tor the construction of 108 feet of 3ft 6in stormwater conduit across Anderson's Bay road from the eastern end of Bay View road to connect to the new twoway reinforced concrete stormwater conduit recently constructed along Anderson's Bay road. This work will form part of the South Dunedin stormwater scheme, and is estimated to cost £559. Provision for this expenditure has been made in the current year’s allocations. Obstructions in Kaikorai Stream

The committee recommends that authority be granted to take the necessary steps for the service of notices on the occupiers of properties abutting on the Kaikorai Stream requiring them to remove obstructions from 'he stream. The Works Committee of the Dunedin City Council reports that the following instructions nave been given to the city engineer. To proceed with the construction ot walling on the western side of Brunei street, at an estimated cost of £250. chargeable to the contingency vote. To complete the kerbing and channelling in Berwick street, at an estimated cost of £42. Provision for this work was made in the- 1939-40 loan schedule, and there is a balance available for the completion now proposed. To construct kerbing and channelling in Eglinton road, on the tramway side, from Queen's drive to the terminus. An amount of £3OO has been provided in the loan allocations for the current year for this work and carriageway improvements in the vicinity. Traffic Revenue The transport manager’s statement of the traffic receipts shows an increase In revenue for the 25 weeks from April 1 to September 27 of £3002. or 2.77 per cent. The revenue and expenditure statement for the 24 weeks ended September 10 discloses that the net surplus for the period is £4IBO, a decrease of £2399 compared with the same period last year. The revenue has increased considerably during the last two months because of the more drastic petrol restrictions, and as there is to be no alteration during the next two months, a further increase in revenue should result. Vehicle Testing Station The General Committee reports that all of Dunedin’s taxis have now been tested at the Vehicle Testing Station. During the month 1184 vehicles were inspected and the amount of cash received amounted to £147 Access Road at Waiporl The Electricity Committee reports that the tender of Mr W. F. Hoad (£2547 12s) has been accepted for the construction of an access road to the disused pipe lines at Waipori Falls The cost of the reading to the pipe lines is approximately £llOO and half cost of this portion of the work will be paid by the Department of Industries and Commerce. The balance of the cost will require to be found by the Electricity Department, including the whole cost of the extension of the road beyond the pipe lines to the flat area across the river Jn the vicinity of the swimming pool ' At present, plant and other material have to be left on the roadside and the new ai’ea to which access is being constructed will provide valuable storage space, The cost of the work will be met from the funds available' front the sale of the pipe lines. Plant for Logan Park The Reserves Committee reports that in accordance with the instructions of the council, the following purchases have been made to replace plant destroyed in the Logan Park Rre: (a) One second-hand McCormick-Deering model 0-12 tractor complete with power take-off, for £220, less 5 per cent. This machirte has been purchased from the Internationa) Harvester Company of N.2., Ltd. (b) From Messrs Gough. Gough and Hamer, Ltd., a (3 gang) Gravic fairway mower, in the sum of £l9B f.0.r.. Christchurch. ' The Gas Committee’s report states that the quotation of Messrs John Chambers and Son,, Ltd., for the supply and delivery of one Oster No. 502 portable screwing machine,’ with standard equipment in the sum of £146. has been Accepted Quotations were invited for this machine, but this quotation Was the only one received, This machine is required to replace the old one at present in use and the cost will be a charge on the Renewal Fund City Treasury Accommodation The Finance Committee reports that a plan of the proposed alterations in the City Treasury with a view to providing additional accommodation, has been approved, and authority has been granted for the calling of tenders for the work. The plan provides for the removal of the cashier’s office to a new position on the ground floor previously occupied by the Traffic Department. The proposed office will be fitted up in conformity with the work already carried out in the building Provision for the expenditure has been made in the current year's allocations.
