RACING AND TROTTING

Eulogist—After a compulsory spell Eulogist is again in work at Riccarton. The Gore Meeting.—A splendid list of nominations has been received for the Gore Racing Club's spring meeting. Silver Streak.—The 12-year-old Silver Streak has re-appeared amongst the nominations for Timaru and Gore. Air Force Handicap.—The field for the Air Force Handicap will supply a good • test for Palfrey, as it is sure to be a fastrun race. Treasurer.—The Winter Cup winner, Treasurer, has been placed on the active list since being spelled after the Grand National meeting. The False Rail.—After an experience of some years, the Australian Jockey Club has done away with the false rail at Randwick. The Victoria Racing Club has taken similar action. Some New Zealand clubs followed the lead of Australia in installing, the false rail, and it will be interesting to «ee whether they fall into line agMiti. " '- Alpine.—The two-year-old Alpine is a well-grown and developed colt engaged on the second day at Wingatui. His stable mate,, Winning Flight, who is engaged in the McLean Stakes, is a smart and nippy filly, but not nearly so robust in appearance as Alpine. At Timaru.—Several horses with important engagements ahead have been nominated, for- the South Canterbury Jockey Club's spring meeting. These include 1 Dictate, Airline. Don't Forget, lieland Spar, Hearth', Prudent Prince, The Raker, The Wrecker, Boloyna, Boswell, Gay Parade. Monetary, Not Out, and Sham B °y. Dark/ Flight.—Yesterday morning Dark Flight was amongst those getting through easy, work at Wingatui. The Nigger Minstrel gelding looks well forward in appearance, and apparently has got through a good deal of work. It is understood that Dark Flight, since resuming training, has not displayed any recurrence of bleeding. Salutation.—The Theio Ally Salutation has grown into a fine type. She appeared at Wingatui yesterday morning, and is a placid-tempered sort, full of quality. As a two-year-old Salutation gave evidence of stamina by staying on, and hence holds a big asset in her favour. At present she looks a bit round in condition and short of a few sharp gallops. She may shape well at Wingatui, but better still when racing a bit later in the season.

Calypso.—On close acquaintance Calypso Impresses as a possibility for the future, as she is a shapely and well-conditioned sort likely to improve on past form. She

got through a lenient task yesterday morning, and will win friends on her appearance. She is apparently rated a bit high in giving weight to those of her own age in Silver Lily, Salutation, Desert Maid and Willow Wood in the Taioma Handicap, but appears to be well forward in condition. TROTTING NOTES By Sentinel FIXTURES October 11.—New Brighton T.C. October 25, 27.—Greymouth T.C. October 25, 27.—Auckland T.C. October 27.—Oamaru T.C. Zincali.—The Trotting Cup candidate Zincali is now being trained by M. B. Edwards. < Renown's Best.—The , Grattan Loya! mare Renown's Best has a colt foal at fcot to'Jack Potts. Renown's Best finished fourth in the Trotting Cup last year, and was got by Grattan Loyal—Renown, by Advance. Officers Appointed.—At a meeting of the committee of the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting CUib Mr. J. Palmer was elected a member of the committee to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Mr W. G. Brass. Mr E. F. Nicoll was elected a steward of the club.

Melbourne Derby.—Since its inception 22 years ago. the pacing section of the Melbourne Derby has been won nine times by colts, eight by fillies, and five by geldings. The figures for the trotting section show geldings successful on 10 occasions, colts seven, and fillies five. Two pacing winners, Auto Machine and TorSedo Huon, won races in Auckland and ave produced winners.

Lady Scott.—To this stage Lady Scott has started four times for two wins, a second, and a third, and on each occasion she has been responsible for a pleasing performance. On Saturday at Methven she had little difficulty in winning the Drayton Handicap Trot, but she ran up against an outstanding young trotter in Bomber in the Riverbank Handicap later in the day, being beaten by half a length. Lady Scott is a well-mannered, mare, who can claim greater ability than the majority in her present class. Unwieldy Fields.—The necessity of running races in divisions at the Methven meeting and thus adding to the difficulties of the club in conducting its meeting has raised a question as to the advisability Of the rearrangement of such popular programmes. It is generally conceded that eight races are sufficient in one afternoon (says the Press), but Methven staged 10 contests. The Auckland Trotting Club has shown, one way out of the difficulty in compiling its programme for its meeting this month. The first day's card shows eight events, including the Improvers' Handicap, of. one mile and a-half, class 3.43, but on the second day only seven events appear on the programme. The Improvers' Handicap is bound to draw a big list of nominations, and 'in this case it will be run in divisions, the second division going to make up a full eightrace programme on the second day. If maiden races must be run at Methven, then it may be found better to delete one event and make each division a separate betting race.

D.J.C. SPRING MEETING THE McLEAN STAKES The feature of the first day of the D.J.C. meeting at Wingatui will be the race for the McLean Stakes, the first two-year-old event of. the season so far as southern tracks are concerned. At present a field of 13 remain in Saturday's race and the majority will be found at the post. Foxhaven is a bay colt by Foxbridge—Pelagia, and has been shaping well under *he tuition of C. Emerson. Pelagia was got by Chief Ruler—Rapture, by Kilbroney— Ambrosian, by St. Ambrose—Neva, by Stepniak, and so lacks nothing on the score of breeding. Red Prize is a bay gelding by Paper Money—Red Treasure, by Balboa—Red Pal. Prince Leighon is a chestnut colt by Leighon—Leisure, by Lord Quex— Spare Moment, by Merry Moment—Melologue, by Advance, and traces back to Rosebud, a taproot that has produced many good winners. Big Top was got by Ringmaster from Trivet, by Paladin—Kerb, by Markhope—Fender, bv Martian. Cateract is a grey colt by Theio—Raiment, by Catmint—Brightly, bv Gazeley—Morie, by Mahaki (a halfbrother to Stepniak)—Maude, by St. Leger —Hilda, and so belongs to a good family mostly noted as stayers. Chestnut Glow is a chestnut filly by Mr StandfastLegality, by Noblesse Oblige—Permissable, by My rian—Perishable, by Isinglass. Trapeze is a brown filly by RingmasterMerry Miss, by Son-in-Law—Merry Lassie, by Black Jester—Country Maiden, by Sunstar Carolyn is' a bay filly by Paper Money from Queen Astrid, a mare that does not appear in the Stud Book. Gold Branch is a bay filly by Guarantee from Privet, by Rizzio—Tiger Rose, by Rossendale. Legal Lady is a bay filly by Solicitor General—Atalanta Lass, by IliadEntree Nous, by Boniform—Secret Link. Grilse is a brown filly by Solicitor General —First Cast, by Salmon Trout—Joyous, by Gay • Crusader —Lady Josephine, by Sundridge. Winning Flight is a bay filly by Winning Hit from Francolin, the dam of Nightwings. Ortyx, Dark Flight, and Gold Flight. Macedoine is a bay filly by Salmagundi—Honest Maid, by PaladinHonesty, by Martian—Success, by The Officer. Yesterday's Track Work At Wingatui yesterday morning the weather was mild and the tracks had been dried up by the wind, so much so that small surface cracks could be seen in one or two bare patches on the grass. The inside of the course now supplies firm going but devoid of sting, and some two-year-olds that cantered down on the rails left a slight impression of hoofprkits. A continuation of the existing weather will find the course providing good going for the meeting. Yesterday was an off morning for fast work, and although a fairly large number of horses were on the course they were mostly restricted to easy tasks. This morning was, however, made interesting by the appearance of visiting horses that arrived at Wingatui on the previous evening. Dark Flight, Alpine and Winning Flight have arrived from the south, and Overland Red, Cataract, Bascule, Grilse. Salutation, Calypso, and Trapeze mark the first to appear from the north. Each of the horses named above looks in good shape. WHANGAREI MEETING ABANDONED (P.A.) WHANGAREI, Oct. 8. Owing to the military authorities advising that the Kensington racecourse will still be required as a territorial camp, the Whangarei Racing Club has abandoned the meeting scheduled for October 31 and November 1.
